For starters, the ep hung together better than last week's. But I can't help but feel that the writers are stuck in a rut and don't really know where to go next. Or if they do, they're clueless as to how to get there.
Because, haven't we seen this before? Ruby keeps thwapping Sam over the head with the fact that if he doesn't start using his powers (again), oceans of people will die (what the hell does that even mean, oceans of people?). And Sam keeps refusing. Ruby's supposed to be smart; why doesn't she try another tack?
Also, Sam keeping Ruby's visit a secret from Dean, then sneaking off to slip into a car with her and go do God knows what? So, next week, or the week after, Dean will find out, and we have a big argument, and then Uriel will show up to warn Dean and threaten Sam and... Yeah, been there, done that. Still have the bruises to prove it, too.
Plus, the last two eps had Major Revelations codas tacked on (even if events happened a month apart). And now, we're back to business as usual? Without it having any consequences or followup? It's like those codas never happened. If so, what was the point? Other than allowing Jensen to cry prettily, that is :)
Supernatural is far from the only show guilty of this, but still, it irks.
On the up side of this ep, there was the conversation of the boys about growing old. It might not have revealed shockingly new information about their characters, but it did demonstrate that their motivations for hunting are still as far apart as ever.
Dean hunts because he's always done that and it's all he knows, and it's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it and he knows he can do it well. There's no end goal beyond killing the next evil creature, and he fully expects he'll keep huntin' until he runs into something that's smarter and faster than he is. And that'll happen before he hits sixty for sure.
For Sam, on the other hand, hunting is still a temporary thing. A job that needs doing until it's done, and he can go on to live a life that allows him to grow old. That's why he went with Ruby in the end. Not because of the oceans of people that supposedly die if he doesn't, but because he sees a way to end it, once and for all.
I also liked that the episode brought back the element of free will. Jay chose to do the right thing and not do evil, despite the price it cost him.
So, not hopeless yet, but can we get a move on, people? Please?
Also, where's the Chief/Dean fic?!?

No promises, but... gacked from
ignipes:
Give me two characters from different fandoms you know I'm familiar with, and I'll give you a dialogue happening between the two of them. Without justifying how the crossover would work, how their worlds clashed, or how they could even meet each other. Just a silly crossover conversation with no backstory, for fun.
