Oh yes, that's what I call a season premiere! Kudos to Kripke and co. for a great job.
What follows are thoughts and speculations based on the season premiere. I am spoilerfree for the rest of the season, and if you comment, please try to make sure I stay that way. Much appreciated. :)
Anyway, in random order:
I like how it wasn't Sam who got Dean out. Many fic writers (including me) have written stories along those lines, but I really couldn't see any of them really happen in the show and still make for an interesting season (probably because most stories only deal with the "getting out of hell"-part and not beyond). Kripke, otoh, used that element to set the tone and start the myth arc for the rest of the season. Clever man!
And squee! Finally, we get to see there is good among the bad as well. Powerful good, uncaring about small details like individual humans. Approves!
At the same time, it scares the hell out of me. Because for God to get involved in the goings-on? That means whatever is coming is BIIIG!! *has uncomfortable memory of the mention of Lucifer in Sin City*
So, God has a job for Dean? That echoes nicely back to Season 1's Faith, where Roy Le Grange said a similar thing as to why he picked Dean to heal: "[I saw] A young man with an important purpose. A job to do. And it isn’t finished." Hurray for continuity!
And it's a job apparently only Dean can do, why else break him out of hell. But I suspect Dean will have a few choice words to say to God (once he gets over his disbelief there is such a creature). And knowing Dean, there's only one job he'll let himself be used for. And that's when it includes saving Sam.
Which brings us back to one of the themes of the show: what is going on with Sam? Obviously, he's tapped into his psychic powers, and is probably only just getting started to learn. And he's working with Ruby again. But keeping it a secret from Dean. That can't be good...
I never agreed with Dean that Sam shouldn't tap into his powers. Those abilities in themselves are neither good or evil. It's how they get used that determines their status. And this? Is exactly how Sam should not have been dealing with them.
And um, Sam? What the hell? Picking up girls whose names you can't even remember properly? Left-over bras all over the place? In a hotel room with a friggin' mirror on the ceiling?!? Now, that's worrisome!
Jensen really nailed the episode (also, he looked amazingly pretty again), outshining everyone else, including Jared. Not that he had much material, really, to sink his actorial teeth in, and I'm sure we get to see some awesome Sam work later on in the season, so it's all good.
Oh, and Pamela so stands for fandom! That bear hug she gave Bobby. Flirting with Dean, and then inviting Sam as well (and hee, there's my threesome right there). Desperately wanting to see what's to come...
Kudos also to the team for paying attention to such details as Dean having bruised knuckles after digging oneself out of one's grave, as well as that glimpse of the protective tattoo.
And, *giggles*, the iPod! It was a small detail in the story, but it spoke volumes about the characters. Dean's glare, that didn't faze Sam at all. Dean may know all about Sam, but the reverse is true just as well. Though Sam was smart enough not to protest when Dean threw the thing into the backseat...
BTW, was it just my copy, or have they amended the color scheme to something a bit more befitting Supernatural than last season? Not as dark as the first (which, to be honest, was a bit too dark at times, making it hard to see what was going on. And that's kinda a requirement in a visual medium...), but not as gaily bright as the third season either. In any case, it looked good.
If I have anything to complain, it's that the gay jokes are getting a little old. And if that's all I can think of, it was a damned fine episode! A great way to start of the new season.
Yay, the boys are back! Hunting things, saving people...
