About the madness that is airline travel…

Dec 30, 2007 20:17

Between lazing about on Sunday and trying to write procrastinating from writing, I found a New York Times blog entry where someone finally speaks out against the madness that are the “security” measures in airports.

I cannot say how much I agree. Which is why I have been avoiding airline travel like the plague for the past few years (not that I managed to remain totally air travel free, but I haven’t seen the inside of an airport since April 2006 - and vacationing has been much more relaxed because of it). Even though that means I’m seriously cramped in my destinations - fortunately, there are plenty of beautiful areas in Europe that are within a day or two car travel’s reach.

Anyway, check out the blog, and don’t forget to read the comments, especially comments 52 and 72. They’d be hilariously funny if not so horrifyingly true.

Quoted from #52:

… two more agents quickly appeared and their unsmiling faces emphasized that airport security was, indeed, very serious business. “We need to be sure you don’t have anything you can use to take control of an aircraft”, the screener told me. I will never forget the absurdity of his words.

You see, I was, in fact, about to take control of an aircraft, an Airbus A320 to be precise, and fly it up the Potomac River to LaGuardia. That’s what airline Captains like me get paid to do. That’s why I had showed up at the airport in full uniform, properly credentialed and ready to go…
