Question for the native speakers on the flist: is it just because I can hear the original Dutch text underneath the translation, or is this really awkward English?
Heart of the neighbourhood
The Community School is more than just a school. The Community School is the throbbing heart of a neighbourhood where there are abundant and varied activities for children, their parents and other neighbourhood residents. It is not without reason that children are mentioned first. The Community School works on new opportunities for all children in a neighbourhood by offering them purposeful and enjoyable facilities. This includes the infant playgroups and primary education, of course, but also other (existing) amenities such as an advice centre for play and upbringing, the child health care centre, music lessons, the library, sports training, childcare, the community centre, etc.
Combined effort
Many people believe that the Community School is only a primary school. This is a misunderstanding. The Community School is a combination of various schools and other organisations. Formerly, they all operated independently, even within a single neighbourhood.
The Community School combines all their endeavour and makes more of them. The participating schools and organisations work on providing a large collective assortment of education, upbringing, health care, sport, play, music, and suchlike. Their existing activities come
under the auspices of the Community School, but co-operation also leads to new activities.
Together, one can do more
Working together creates new possibilities. For example, children go to extramural care in the afternoons when they come out of school, build and make objects in the school’s handwork classroom, play games in the community centre, go in groups to the children’s garden, or to swimming lessons. It is relatively easy to make this kind of arrangement within a Community School.
I can do this in German too, if anyone is interested :-)
