Suikoden Tierkreis, Part 15

Sep 01, 2013 13:30

Hello, dear readers, and welcome back to "Let's Play Suikoden Tierkreis!" with Lady Nighteyes. Last time, we named our group and it rejected "Cool Dudes Company" for some reason, so we are now the Zodiac Company, and we are going places.

Last time, as you may recall, we were on our way to the Magedom of Janam, via the Mislato River. I definitely did not make any mercantile detours on my way over.

Sieg is a picture of brilliance and eloquence.

Hey, it's that guy with the hat! And he has a name and Asad knows him!

Well, we certainly saw your hat.
Asad: Luvais, you are already acquainted with our friends here?
Luvais: Not really. We just happened to run into each other once along the road.

Yup, because nobody else actually did any controllable fighting.

Zarla suggested last time that the double quote marks represent Sieg doing that obnoxious little finger-quotes gesture. I like this idea.

Luvais: Yes, well, I guess you could say that.
Asad: This is Luvais. He travels here and there and gathers intelligence for us.
Think he could spare some extra for Sieg?
Chrodechild: It was Luvais's information that allowed us to rush to Citro so quickly.
Sieg: Huh? So we owe this guy too?
Luvais: I'd hardly say you owe me for a little thing like that.
Sieg: Ha! You're all right, mister!
Luvais: Haha. Well, I'd better be off. I'm hearing interesting news from the west...
Asad: We will await your report eagerly.
Luvais: Understood.
He starts to leave, but Sieg yells after him.

...Then he leaves for real, putting us back in control.

La-di-da.

As usual, there are monsters. Unfortunately for them, most of them are weak to Slash damage.

And I have Chrodechild along.

Note the experience-scaling- the Badass Brigade are so much higher-level than the monsters that they're only getting 1 XP apiece.

There are several side-paths, but they're pretty much all blocked off by these guys right now. I assume they want to stop you from raiding everything while you've got the badasses along, which seems a bit unfair to me- why give them to you if they don't want you to use them?

There is one side-path you can get to, but all it has is this chest, which contains ONE of a trade good you can carry up to 99 of. Cheapskates.

Anyway.

(No, I don't know how people get up to those floating buildings in the background either.)

In addition to being bigger, Cynas was also a cartoonishly evil dystopia, Sieg.
Marica: The Order's city was so quiet that it was kind of creepy, but I like this place. It's so lively!
Sieg: I like this place better, too!
So maybe we can last for more than one day without being chased out by the army this time?
Asad: Thank you. I am glad you like it.

Asad yells at you if you try to go anywhere else, so let's head in.

Chrodechild: The Blades were only called to support your troops. Our contribution was minimal. I do not deserve an audience with His Lordship.
Asad: Chrodechild! That's not true!
Chrodechild: And I do not think Lady Shairah would be very pleased to see me either.
The voice-acting alternates between "SHY-ra" and "SHY-la" on this one. Great job, dub team.
Asad: Oh, well, you may have a point there... Very well. I will report to His Lordship on your behalf.

Well, that was mysterious.
Marica: What was she talking about?

I don't suppose this would be because you're going to EXPLAIN it? What am I saying, of course not.
Asad: Shall we go?
Cue anime cutscene. I'm not really sure why this one's here. 5:02-5:30

The entire first sentence is missing in the voice-acting so that they can avoid saying things you name. For some reason, this amuses me.

I assume that in Japanese, Sieg phrased it in a really informal way, so this comes across a little weird in English, which doesn't have nearly as many gradations of politeness built into the grammar.
Sieg: Huh? Rude?

Albeit one with crazy jewelry.

...You kind of sound like you're hitting on him. You do realize he's fifteen, right?

Must resist... urge to add comma...

I have NO idea how her top stays on. But she IS still wearing more clothes than Danash (or, as we are about to see, his son) and about as much as Asad, so I guess that counts for something?

Goddammit, not ANOTHER missing comma. DDD:::

I dislike Shams' voice-acting more than almost anyone else in the game's, aside from Liu (and Chrodechild when she's trying to give a dramatic speech). And though I haven't checked, I'm pretty sure Liu and Shams have the same voice-actor, so hey, at least we know who to blame.

Who the hell uses the word "unflinchingly" in a conversation?

"Robust?" I think you're thinking of Vaslof.

In any other game, Shams/Sieg would be a popular ship. In this one, shippers are so spoiled for choice on potential slashy couples that it's running a distant third for Sieg and second for Shams.
Marica: Wow. To have even the Prince say things like that about us...

Danash: That's exactly what Shams and I are saying.

Danash: The Order of the One True Way keeps expanding its influence by misleading the people with dubious prophecies. Their military power is now great enough to challenge even our Magedom. Several small countries have already been crushed and annexed by force. I truly wish to stop their menace and free people from this delusion they call the "One True Way." To achieve this, I need the cooperation of people of strength and courage, such as yourselves.
Personally, I would have included "intelligence" high enough on the list that Marica would be preferred over Sieg, but that's just me.
Danash: If ever your homeland is in danger, Magedom forces will take action. In return, will you agree to lend us your strength?

Asad: What do you mean, Sieg?
Sieg: I mean, it's just, only we seem to get anything out of this deal.

Sieg: Nah, I don't mean that I think you're trying to scam us. It's just...
Danash: Hmm... You don't want to feel indebted to us, perhaps? In that case, would you feel more at ease if I were to ask a favor of you now?
Sieg: Yeah, that'd make me feel better. What do you want us to do?
Danash: I understand that you have acquired Chronicles and received their powers.
Sieg: "Chronicles"...? You mean these books?
Marica: Yes, that's right. We did.
Danash: I'm sure you've already heard there is a Chronicle in the Magedom too. I'd like to entrust you with it.
o_O I was JOKING about giving it to us!
Marica: What?!
Sieg: H-huh?!

Well, you could make a case for "because he smiles almost as evilly as Diadora"...

GEE, I WONDER WHY. (Incidentally, this is probably the most inconsistently-pronounced name in the game. Sometimes it's said how it's spelled, sometimes it "Rizlan," and sometimes it's even "Lizlan." Once again, great job, dub team.)

Asad: Your Lordship, Chrodechild has returned to the Blades outpost. She said that, thanks to the help of Sieg and his party, the role of the Blades of Night's Veil, this time, was little more than support. She said she did not deserve an audience with Your Lordship.
Danash: Hmm... humble as ever, I see.

Danash: I see. You may go now.
Asad: Yes, Your Lordship!

NOTHING GOING ON HERE, NO SIRREE.

Since there's no voice-acting to ruin it, I imagine her slipping into a Texas accent here.
Sieg: Huh?!
Marica: Y-Your Ladyship...?!
Shairah: Oh, the way I'm talkin'? This is my "private-talk." The Imperial Palace is like my workplace, right? So I use my "work-talk" there. But once I'm outta there, I'm like, why bother?

Poor Asad.

Sieg: Of course!
Shairah: Good.

I would never have guessed from your description of her.
Marica: Old bag?
Asad: The head of the Arcane Academy is Lady Rizwan, the Second Empress Consort.
Marica: Second...?
Sieg: The Mage Lord has two wives?
Shairah: Nah, he's got three. Prince Shams, the boy ya just saw, that's the third one's son, not mine.
Marica: Th-three...
Hooray for culture shock.

^In the interests of humor.

Daaang. He's a busy guy, I guess.

I literally fell out of my chair laughing the first time I hit this point, because my first thought was, "He wants to marry Voldemort?"

(Seriously, how is she not experiencing a wardrobe malfunction there.)

But he's so PRETTY. ;_;

Can we please just appreciate the phrase "Her Bagship"?
Asad: I-I see your point...

:::CCC

Well then. It would appear we have landed in a big ol' mess of ~politics~. Next time, the Arcane Academy, among other things. Nighteyes out.
