Title: Isolation

Isolation
Pain was a fact of life.
Loss was yet another.
Nagi had learned this young, and he had relearned it repeatedly over the course of his life.
He rarely turned his thoughts to these topics on purpose, instead choosing to shove his memories further down into his unconscious. If given the option, he would have shoved even further, until all of the agony and regret was pushed cleanly out of him. He imagined doing so would be a relief, one that he could never realistically obtain. Instead, he created armor out of apathy and shielded his heart with indifference, determined to refrain from close relationships that were only doomed to end in death or betrayal or rejection.
Nagi already knew he had failed spectacularly in one regard: No matter how high he built walls around himself, Chihiro always managed to break through them. Most of the time this merely frustrated him, but since returning to their world he now found that it terrified him. In his nightmares he continued to see a slide show of danger that constantly loomed around Chihiro: multiple injuries from too many skirmishes and battles to count, lying unconscious before the might and vengeance of Suzaku, the dark and horrible fist taking hold of her hair in an attempt to drag her to her death. This was no longer protecting Chihiro from scraped knees or prying questions from well-meaning peers -- this was war, and the cost of losing was far too high.
He was not willing to pay such a horrible price.
There was only one way to remove Chihiro from the constant and impending danger that lay ahead. Unwilling to allow the worst case scenario even a sliver of possibility, Nagi steeled his resolve to take away her leadership role and bear that burden on his own shoulders.
Losing Chihiro was inevitable -- at least this way it would be on his own terms and hopefully save her life at the same time.

Crossed swords. Narrowed gazes. Bared and gritted teeth.
He loved the rush of battle, no doubt about it. There was nothing so fulfilling as claiming victory over formidable opponents by slicing into them and drawing blood.
But Tomomori had never before faced an adversary quite like the Genji-no-Miko. And now that she had set his blood on fire, he knew he had to meet her on the battlefield once more.
