Notes: Written for fujitsubo's request on this meme. It's, unfortunately, quite short. Ludwig seems to derive enjoyment out of sapping my creativity. -_-
Ludwig knew with absolute certainty that Erika Klaus was nowhere near a good match for him.
She was clumsy and overeager, naive and simplistic. Her social standing could not begin to compare to his own. Her scope of the future held no sense of the oncoming changes in the Kuchen's politics. She was, quite honestly and in her entirety, completely useless to him.
Ludwig despised those who served no purpose. He was not an idealist to be taken in with a few heartfelt words, nor the kind of fool to fall for a pretty face. While he knew her intelligence ranked above the majority of their classmates it remained far below his own.
So why, Ludwig wondered with no small amount of self-directed anger and chagrin, had he found himself unwittingly attracted to her? More to the point of the immediate moment, what on earth had possessed him to spend his entire morning going through the greenhouse to find the absolute perfect flower to present to her that afternoon when he took her into town? Camus would have gladly chosen it for him, he was certain, if he had asked his timid cousin for the favor. Yet Ludwig had dismissed the idea immediately since he wanted no one to grow aware of the care he took in his interactions with Erika.
Ultimately the great amount of thought went to waste when a hurried and frazzled Erika ran up to meet him, immaculately groomed as he always was, and apologized several times for showing up late. Ludwig shushed her with a wave of one gloved hand while the other effortlessly slid a splendidly rare blue rose into her hair behind one ear. The blush that followed was simply beneath Ludwig's notice and so he did not deign to comment on it as he held out his arm for her hand and led her off into town.
