NOLA day 5

Jan 17, 2012 22:36

The final day of the scrabble, and despite going to bed between 3 and 4 I was wide awake at 630 again. mthgeek forewent his running to stay in the bed with me and try to get me to keep sleeping. This actually worked - I managed to sleep until about 730. Got up and walked to coffee and to Rouses Market where we grabbed yogurt and granola for a lighter breakfast.

The morning of scrabble was quite the roller coaster, and very suspenseful. I told vinylchances before the first game that my prediction was that Jesse would sneak in and win it all, and so it came to be. I really thought I had no shot at finishing in the money, but somehow the timing wound up perfect -- in how my brain was working in the final game and by how all the other games finished and by how the tiles fell, and I ended up second. It does feel weird to take home a big prize at my own event, but so it goes. I am certainly not complaining. The money will go toward future tourneys, and the new xbox/kinect star wars special edition bundle due out in June. Munched on a Johnnys Poboy and had to be in way too many pictures during the awards ceremony.

Wandered off for a quiet lunch at Napoleon House as the dust settled. Pimms cups, meatball sub and muffuletta, plus classical music, an atmosphere that felt like we had stepped backwards in time, and the post-games surreal feeling you get when you somehow manage to do well at a tourney. Plus the sheer exhaustion, delirium and satisfaction of an event that you organized finishing up.

Back to the hotel, said some goodbyes, wandered the streets looking at souvenirs and postcards, and then out to a quiet dinner at Capdeville. Probably the least successful meal of the trip. The service was pretty slow, and everything just tasted a little too salty for me, it may have also been attributable to my body reaching its limit on rich foods. Had a Cobb salad with chicken, bacon and avocado, with charred onion vinaigrette, and some fries. Did greatly enjoy my Pinkberry frozen yogurt on the way home. Fell asleep typing a lj entry around 9:45 and didn't get up again til 830 the next morning. Ah, sleep.
