An Experiment: Walking Poetry's America: Part 8
In a previous entry I started laying the timeframe down. Let me finish that bit of math now.
Remember:
That's like:
- waking up at 6:30
- 7:00 breakfast/chill
- hit the road at 8:00 until
- lunch at 12:00
- hit the road again at 1:00 until 6:00. That's 40 miles a day.
Basically it's a work day. You could walk to Cleveland in 3.6 days.
On paper it looks totally manageable.

Having sussed that out, let's cut that back to 3 MPH for maximum comfort and Playstation body. Kind of slow, and I don't even want to think about how many days that just added to the forumla, but let's get the number just so I have it. For the record, it just turned Cleveland's 36.7 hours of road time to 49.
Columbus, Ohio to Cleveland, Ohio = 147 miles.
Avg. walking speed = 3 MPH.
147 / 3 = 49 hours to walk from Columbus to Cleveland
If it takes you 20 minutes per mile @ 3 MPH then you will do 30 miles a day (at 10 hours a day).
Now let's expand that formula to the country.
Let's use the ADT mileage since it's been figured out. We know that all of my maps are longer than the ADT, but since we don't know by how much this is mostly to figure out a MINIMUM amount of time, not THE amount of time. Since I know my routes are longer, I'll use the higher southern ADT count of 5,057 miles.
5,057 miles / 30 miles a day = 168.6 days (5.6 months)
Understand that's 168 days without a day off, which we know ain't happening. So let's add, mmmm, 2 days for every week in 5.6 months.
168 / 7 days per week = 24.1 weeks
24.1 x 2 weekend days = 48 weekend days
So:
48 weekend days + 168.6 walking days = 216.6 days total trip
Now, the problem with this math is that it's less time than it took these two people to conquer the northern (shorter) ADT when they were doing an average of 20 miles a day without any consideration for whether or not someone had a poetry event at a rest stop (231 days with only 4 days of rest!). My trip should be WELL over what their trip was in terms of days.
Dammit!!! I HATE MATH!

Try 168 / 5 weekdays per week and quit trying to do funky weekend math.
168 / 5 = 33.6 weeks
33.6 x 2 weekend days = 67.2
168 + 67.2 = 235.2 days for whole trip
