A/N:- Written for tw100's challenge #332: Gwen Cooper. The first line popped into my head almost as soon as I read the prompt. Mildly unflattering to Gwen.
Title is a quote from a letter written by 17th century scientist Sir Isaac Newton to his fellow-scientist Robert Hooke, acknowledging the debt he owed to other scientists: 'if I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants'.

"You'll win mum," Anwen whispered squeezing Gwen's hand. Rhys nodded, grinning.
Gwen looked round the posh banqueting hall. Since the Torchwood Archives had been opened her quiet suburban existence really had been turned upside down.
'Wales' alien busting heroine' the newspapers had called her.
Ridiculous.
She had been one of hundreds, thousands, at Torchwood over the years, many of whom had given their lives defending their country.
But as her her name was called and the applause rose she had to admit all the attention was very nice.
