Relaxing and Waiting

Aug 05, 2008 09:55

Well, I've been in my parents house for a little over a week with one more week to go, and I have to say that it's been a wonderful holiday from the mayhem of Graeme's dad's house.  OK, I've spent a large portion of time doing laundry and mess control (Graeme and I are creative - don't expect us to be neat as well), but it just feels so relaxing.

There's never any pounding dance music that Graeme's stepmum and step-brother like to listen to.  I don't feel like I'm stealing dad and stepmum's private time when I sit up in the living room waiting for Graeme to come home late in the evening.  I don't worry about eating their food or using their milk.  When I do the laundry, I don't worry about how much anyone else has to do.  Maybe it's just because this was home for 18 years before I went to uni, or maybe it's because Graeme and I are here on our own, but I'm just more comfortable here.

We desperately need our own place.  But with rent, utility bills and council tax there's almost no way we can afford somewhere until I have a job, even with the financial help my parents are giving me.  And I feel guilty that I'm still financially dependent on them.  They've been supporting me for the past 5 years while I've been out on my own and now I've graduated I should be able to stand on my own two feet.  Now that Kate and I have flown the nest, they should be able to focus on themselves, not still making sure I have food money.

I obviously didn't get the job in Borders.  They said after the interview that they'd call me by 5pm the night of the interview to let me know if I was through to the second round of interviews over the weekend and they didn't call.  I got a standard letter yesterday wishing me luck in my future career.  Graeme did some digging and found out that I was lucky to get an interview.  They rarely hire people without an English degree, which is pretty snobby.  I'm gutted, because I hardly ever get asked in for interviews when I'm job hunting.  I've got an application in for a PT receptionist job with the PDSA, which would be great and hopefully I'll here sometime this week if I've got an interview for that.  We've also found out that there's several jobs going at Graeme's old branch in Glasgow and he's going to see how the manageress would feel about me applying, though given that he's at another branch entirely now, I can't see how that would be a problem.  It might even make me more motivated.  I don't believe in getting paid if you don't put in the work you're supposed to, but if Graeme recommended me for a job I really wouldn't want to let him down or make him look bad.
