Well, at least you're not acting as if this shit is something new from Hollywood. Hell, look at almost anything they use the phrase "based on..." unfortunately most of the worst ends up being horror movies. Blair Witch Project had to be one of the worst offenders of my memory. They sold the movie as this new "real" thing and then we see the woman hocking milkshakes for Steak and Shake.

And let's not get started on Amityville Horror!

This IS something new. The whole point is that when they say "based on a true story", they at least dig up some obscure news story or article or legend that claims to be true. I am unaware of any previous attempt to blatantly recreate a "true" story (forging obituaries?!), then sell it to the public that way to add meat to your purely fictional film.

This is different than those other cases. That's the whole point of this rant. No one believes they're capable of delivering a story as "real" as the real story because the real story would be too boring for Hollywood. We understand that, given a property towork with, tehy'll dress it up or fuck with it until it's unbelieveable anyway. That's not my beef. My beef is making up the "real" story to begin with.

Blair With was also different in that they didn't tell you it was real...they just didn't tell us (general audiences; critics knew) it was fake. Again, different dynamic.
