So I shook the mint over a piece of white paper and looked at the dots that came off of it. Several were tiny and red and slowly crawling around. Yup, mites eating my plants. So we got a spray bottle, and I mixed up some soapy water, and dutifully sprayed them.
First day, some big leaves got black spots on them, like what had been happening slowly before, only quickly now. "Guess the soap reacts to the areas the mites have been eating" I thought. Did it again today, determined to kill those pesky mites. Entire leaves turned black.
Shit. "Do you suppose it has anything to do with this being antibacterial soap?" Jenifer asked. I look at the soap. Active ingredient: Triclosan. After some Googling, sure enough, I find: "Triclosan is a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) structurally similar to the weed killer 2,4D... and is classed as a pesticide by the EPA."
