FWOOSH.

A flash of energy turns darkness to daylight, for just a short moment.

"Okay." Alphonse Elric is talking to himself. There's no one else in the tiny apartment. Hearing his own [tiny, childish, nervous] voice echoing in his helmet brings him some [very] small amount of comfort, which is in short supply. He needs all he can get.

He's used alchemy to bond the Forge to his armor's forearm for safekeeping, a simple feat. He was afraid to leave it behind. So far it was his only contact with anyone here. It had stopped working, though. If Al knew how it operated, what it could do, what it was made of, he could possibly repair it, but he'd never seen anything like it.

Still, better safe than sorry.

It may be fixed and used in the future, so he decided to take it along. The Forge was the only thing of real value in the room.

"That's done. Now I need to go look for Brother."

Brother.

He had to be okay. He HAD to be.

Alphonse wasn't sure he was talking about his brother, or himself.

______________

Alphonse approached the small door in the darkened room. He hesitated for a long moment. If his body still did such things, he'd have been quivering in fear and apprehension.

Maybe it's locked. Maybe it's VERY locked. Maybe there are soldiers on the other side waiting to attack him the second the door opened. Maybe there were homunculi waiting to do worse. Maybe there would be a portal to another world. His own world, perhaps.

Maybe Brother was there. Maybe Edward Elric was standing just on the other side of the door.

Al hoped. More than anything, he hoped Edward was there. He hoped Edward was alive.

"Please, Brother. Be alive. I know you are. You HAVE to be." He sounded more frightened than he realized he felt.

His own voice was no longer comforting.

[You have to be.]

With a mental nod, and a determination to make everything all right, even if he had to do it all by himself, Alphonse gripped the brass-colored doorknob, turned it, and pulled open the door.
