You don't have to do that, Riza had said, but Sakura begged to differ.

She was already leaving the apartment when Riza's reply had come, a message she'd had no inclination to reply to because she would insist, and Riza would deflect again, and at a certain point what counted the most was action. Because Riza was not fine, no matter how much she pretended to be. Though she could certainly understand the faking, because sometimes one wants it to be true for themselves as much as they want it to be true for the sake of others.

Whichever way she looked at Riza--as a comrade, as a friend--Sakura knew she had to.

It was a familiar path to the Patrol's headquarters, then up the two flights, and then she knocked softly on the door she knew to be Riza's.

"It's Sakura," she called.
