He arrives with a cautious hand on his cane, in case the young man - for whom Rapunzel'd had mixed reviews - did have a fight in mind.]
Eugene?
[Although he's in plain sight, Break doesn't seem to notice him.]
Reply
[Pushes away from the building he was leaning against to look at the man, blinking in surprise at the cane. He doesn't mention it, however, out of respect for Rapunzel and the fact that he knew that the other man was a friend of her's.]
[There's a pause, because he's not entirely sure how to start this conversation. He sucks at this part.]
How much about Rapunzel do you know?
Reply
A good bit, I'd like to think.
[He pauses, and his voice gets more solemn.]
You're sure that she's gone again?
Reply
[He sighs, running a hand through his hair.]
She worries me sometimes, because she's not really naive when it comes to the world, you know? She's got a good head on her shoulders though and I know from first hand experience that she's really good at making friends with just about anyone.

Or he could just be a very good liar.]
You know, there's some things Rapunzel told me about you. That made it sound like you weren't to be trusted. I'd like to think it was just a lover's quarrel - or whatever you were to each other - and that you aren't as bad as she made you sound. But you're her primary contact, and now she's disappeared twice. You can't blame me for being suspicious, not when I know less about you than I do about her.
Reply
To be honest, I think I would be more surprised if you did trust me.
What do you want to know?
[It's not like he really had secrets anymore, Rapunzel was calling him Eugene in public after all, and 'Flynn Rider' didn't have the same meaning in Anatole that it did back home.]
Reply
She said that you left her after you'd gotten what you were looking for.
[Those were her words, not his. But you can imagine how they sound.]
Did you?
Reply
Is THAT what she thought?!
[Now what she was saying made more sense to him. Not that he could blame her, since as far as she knew, that had been what he wanted. He never got to tell her how much his dream had changed.]
Not in the sense that she was thinking I bet. When I agreed to escort her into the town, the deal was I'd escort her to and back and in return, she'd give me back something of mine. But... it turns out that what she had, I found wasn't important to me after all.
So, no, I didn't get what I was looking for. What I did find was some former associates of mine having something they weren't supposed to. Oh, and the hangman's noose. THAT was fun to get away from.
Reply
-Although the train of thought is certainly derailed by mention of the hangman's noose.]
Oh really? Were you falsely accused of a crime?
[Or even rightly accused. Break doesn't sound judgmental, for once. Because really, that would make him the biggest hypocrite ever.]
Reply
[Not that you can see it, of course, but he does look awfully embarrassed.]
Turns out that they don't particularly like sticky fingers apparently.
Reply
[Now he's a bit outraged on your behalf.]
That seems a bit like overkill. [Haha, get it?] What exactly made you turn to stealing?
[He's less perturbed by this confession than one might expect from a pseudo-paternal figure. But stealing is so ridiculously low on the transgression scale for him, it's as if the kid confessed to jaywalking.]

I grew up in an orphanage. When I got old enough, I decided to leave, go on a grand adventure and make something of myself.

Ah, yes, I can see how a life of crime was just calling your name. There's easier ways to make money, I would think.
