[ It's a good thing Lust's baking only tastes poisonous, or Arthur wouldn't be here tonight. But it's not exactly a great effort to attend, given his rooms are just down the hall. (Attempting to sleep in his bed or vomiting on his doorstep would be a spectacularly bad idea. Fortunately this doesn't seem to be that sort of party.) It makes sneaking in the gifts in a horribly embarrassed sort of way rather easier. ]

[ Arthur's hair is still wet when he first arrives, curling a little behind his ears. He has dressed all in black, a simple outfit in the style of his time, the fabric rich and soft. The heat means he's rolled up the long sleeves and left the laces of the collar wide. Apart from his ring he wears no other adornments, not even a dagger at the hip, a rare display. ]

[ But despite his informal appearance, Arthur is restrained and polite, avoiding lengthy conversations, approachable but not approaching. He spends a full forty-five minutes poring over his Tanabata wish, and glaring at anyone coming close enough to read over his shoulder. As the evening wears on, however, and he's well into his cups, Arthur grows more sociable. ]

[Out of the crowd she zooms, appearing at his side to tug with almost obnoxious persistence at his sleeve.]

[ It amuses him that his nickname is now only two syllables. Her noisiness breaks though his reserve. Turning, he bends and picks her up easily. ]

[She throws her arms around his neck as he picks her up and gives him a little kiss on the cheek in greeting.]

Who, Xerbie? No, he had detectivey stuff to do so he said he couldn't come! But he said he might be around when the party's over so we can go home together! I could introduce you then if you want!

[She leans back a little in his arms, grinning happily. The combination of this party and Senji's return to Anatole have done wonders for her mood.]

But if you need a detective, I can help you! I'm a Field Agent!

[She makes a fist and mimes focusing a magnifying glass.]

I can solve your mysteries for you, Au-rin!

[ Arthur smiles, praying that she hasn't opened her presents yet so he doesn't have to talk about his feelings. She seems ebullient either way, and when she asks what's wrong Arthur just shakes his head. ]

Nothing. I think I've forgotten how to mingle. If I ever knew at all.

[It's comfortable. And kind of heartening. Given how bad things have been between them... recently. If that "her" was even really countable as her in her entirety.]

That sort of mingling is very dull.

Lady Priscilla. May I present my salutations on your birthday. I do hope you're enjoying your party. And may I add that your dress is particularly stunning this evening. And so on, and so forth.

[ he wrinkles his nose. ]

It's all true, of course, but it loses meaning when you do it to fifty different guests in a row.
