How strange it felt to be mingling so freely in the Headquarters again with people that loved and loathed him alike. They were united by a distinctly like-minded goal, however. Perhaps that made all the difference.
In spite of recent events, Isley had taken great care to see the plans for Priscilla’s birthday party come to culmination. It would mark her second birthday in Anatole; she would be turning eighteen, at least in theory. Whether or not the Scorched truly aged in this city was still under investigation. Of course, none of that mattered today. Theorizing could wait until later when there were not guests to greet and attend, and there were not strings to pull.
With the assistance of Kaien and Sebastian, the décor and buffet was in place. Pale yellow and ivory tapestries covered the high-ceilinged walls. On sconces between tall windows, flowers and ribbon were entwined. Simple flowers, the kind Priscilla liked best. Beneath the windows in a single-file arrangement were rows of tables surrounded by chairs. Each table was draped with a silken tablecloth. Every centerpiece upon the tables was surrounded by brass figurines-a cat, a wolf, a horse, a bird, and a fox. At the far end of the ballroom nearest the door was a table set aside for gifts. At the furthest end a tall potted tree to commemorate the peculiarity that was Tanabata, something Priscilla had recently been musing over.
Everything was perfect. Even the soft metallic hum of music sifting through the air.
