But honestly he would have been touched had Kanda worn the sweater, even gifted him early the new pair of boots and hair-tie that he had purchased before this dream. Even if Kanda always said don't get him anything, Lavi wondered if he got a secret little thrill at being thought of enough to have gotten something.
The stars are more interesting at the moment, the false dawn, the setting moon. He'll be sad he missed Kanda's rare amusement at Damia quacking every time his Forge went off. Why do you do this to him? Lavi hadn't wanted to take his Forge with him, he wanted to be alone, to think.
Of course it's a good idea. He'll...probably want a familiar face when he comes back. Not sure Kanda will like the hug he'll get but...yeah. For now it's just Lavi and the stars on the rooftop and Kanda with Forge spamming and a duckling in the Outpost.]

there'll be a full five minutes' worth of 'hey, duck. hey.' messages, clearly directed at Damia. of course, had he been actually thinking (or caring), he'd realize that Lavi would find these messages later. but that's no big deal.
it's perhaps after the, uh. nth text or so that Kanda stops and simply settles for a seat next to the window. something about the way Lavi didn't reply to his last text message still nags at him in a.. less than comfortable way. he wouldn't be camping out in Lavi's room, otherwise.]

Not to mention Lavi is going to read each of these messages aloud to Kanda when he gets back. Just so the swordsman realizes what he's done. If you're going to remind him that he's straying from his path then why are you trying to reach out to him? You're not supposed to... But at least Kanda knows that Lavi isn't the type to go off and kill himself or even find someone to do it for him. There's too much work that he has to do. So really it's a matter of waiting for Lavi to reappear.
Which he does start to do when the true dawn starts rising, using the hammer to get down quickly from the building before they start inspecting it for the morning. Then it's a quiet walk back to the Outpost, hands in his pockets and head bowed as he thinks things over again. Knows that he'll have to resign from the Patrol because it's too involved, thank god he never spent any of his money.
Kanda will probably see him from the window and if he doesn't leap out of it to harass the rabbit, Lavi will eventually wander up the stairs to his room.]

he.. kind of wondering that himself. Lavi is getting too close to people, and while Kanda couldn't care less about how Lavi sees others, this whole being friendly with him can't go on forever. he knows that. it's better if they weren't. friends. but..
..it's too late for that, isn't it?
he's propping his chin up in his palm, elbow on the windowsill, watching Lavi walk closer to the Outpost. won't jump out to harass him this time. but he'll still be looking outside when Lavi walks in.]

He needs a sort of rock-steady figure to anchor himself to, and that would be Kanda. No matter what happened to him or to the swordsman, Kanda was the one who remained more of the same that he had been before whatever happened. Sure he might be a little stronger or a little bit softer, but the majority of the changes that happened Lavi never got to see. Because Kanda always remained a sea urchin, poisoned barbs with a hard shell that kept you from getting at whatever was inside.
Lavi pauses when he opens the door, looking at Kanda and then around for whatever mess he might have made. When he sees one he gives a mental sigh and moves into the room, shutting the door behind him as he moves over to check on Damia in her bucket. She quacks softly as she's picked up and placed on the bed, Lavi silently going about feeding her her breakfast. For once he's ignoring you, Kanda. How does that feel? Hug will come later, watch.]

there really isn't much of Kanda that's able to change. he isn't a 'child'. he isn't 'young'. he can't 'grow up' any more than he already has, even if he remembers none of it. and even if he does change, none of that is to be seen. he's long decided that this is who he is, who he will always be. unmoving, seemingly shallow, a jerk who doesn't care about his comrades (although that part of his is slowly changing, as much as he'd like otherwise), forever tied to a single promise made to a woman he can't even remember.
in Anatole, he doesn't know who he is anymore.
the mess is minimal, some papers shuffled here and there, but otherwise he's only moved a chair or two. while Lavi's busy with the duckling, Kanda will keep sitting here silently. he doesn't mind being ignored, really, even if it's. a bit odd. considering it's Lavi. he doesn't like that he's almost gotten used to Lavi hugging and draping over his shoulders.
he should probably explain why he's here though. but that's hard to do when he hardly knows why he's here.]

It's coming, that wall he's built is still so fragile that one word from Kanda might trigger the incoming hug. But there won't be draping, there won't be clinging, there won't really even be annoying Lavi smiles. And on Lavi, this behavior makes him almost seem listless, like he doesn't have anything that's keeping him going through the days but the motions needed to get through them.
So after taking care of Damia he's straightening things, pulling out a bag or two that he's managed to gain in his time in Anatole and started to pack. Really...he doesn't know why he's packing, either. Everything from here. They just have memories but he can't exactly just live in his uniform, there's always the need to blend in. And there's pieces of whittling that he's not quite done with, a few journals filled with information. They all go into the bags.
But when that's done...
There isn't anything left besides confront Kanda as to why he's here. After all, he's not furniture or air like Link.]
What is it?

there's no reason not to be friendly here, other than he was hardly ever friendly before. no reason not to be nicer to comrades, no reason not to wake up a little later than he usually would. no reason not to push away Lavi's hugs and things, no reason not to harmlessly argue with Allen, maybe even get along with him. no reason not to.. be 'normal'.
it's been almost a year, he realizes. since they've arrived.
he turns to watch the last bit of Lavi packing, though still silent. at least, until Lavi speaks up.]
..Going somewhere?

He looks back down at his bags.]
I'm quitting the Patrol.

blinks.]
..Why? [he is.. just a bit curious. not that he plans to stop Lavi or anything.]

They're too involved. I can't be.
[He pauses a little, looking at the bags he'd have to carry. Muttering to himself:] Maybe a break...

You just now realized? [slightly sarcastic, but otherwise an even tone. more of a passing comment than an accusation of anything.]

Lavi stiffens however and lifts the bags, taking them to the closet where he dumps them. Telling himself that he doesn't need these things. Right now he'll take it as an accusation and coming from Kanda of all things... It hurts more than he cares to admit.]
Why are you here?
Reply
he's watching that, hiding the slight twinge of guilt. but he soldiers on, because this is... him. how he's always been. not nice, not kind. not a friend. it's tiring, though.
so he takes in a breath, and props his chin up in a palm, elbow resting on the sill.]
..You're an idiot.
[yup.]

Kanda will keep getting Lavi's back, he hasn't moved from the closet even as he shuts it.
A short and bitter laugh.]
You think I didn't notice?
[Leaning his head against the closet door.]
Reply
Che. You're too much of an idiot to notice. [hrmph.
but he's only quiet for another second before he speaks up again.]
..You know I don't care who you are.
