[ That is the opposite of what it means, he thinks, sitting at the bar in the kitchen, staring at a cup of tea he really doesn't want right now. Why would something that has been set free want to look back at its captor and cage? Why would it hesitate? No, he's convinced that he'd chased her off long ago and the only thing holding her to him was their shared name and her life behind the bars of nobility, two things that mean nothing here to anyone but him. ]
That is what freedom means.
[ He doesn't look at the Forge, not right now, preferring that comforting darkness again where he doesn't have to see those eyes. ]
However, if setting it free will allow it to blossom, then it is worth the loss.

[ Bonds, themselves, are ephemeral. Regardless of how strong they may seem, how influential they are, they all fade one day. They all break. Such is the curse for allowing that thin thread to wrap around a finger or connect with a heartstring. And more importantly, there is always something to lose when a bond forms and never is it a feeling one wants to feel.
When did his bond with Rukia extend beyond 'obligation'? When did he start to worry that he might lose her? Maybe it was 'always', only he never recognized it for what it was because he had been so wrapped up in the loss of another that he refused to see beyond her, beyond this duty he had been left with. That ceased to matter now. When or why, or even the how were all pointless questions. All that mattered... ]
... Rukia.
[ Such strength. She and her sister were not so unlike each other and it was not about appearance. They had both found a way to tear at his walls, in different ways, to make him question the things he had always been taught were right

You did the right thing. [It's quiet and a little solemn.] Cages aren't right for everyone. [Maybe she has no real idea what this dream is about. But it does strike a chord with her.
Those eyes reminded her of someone not seen in this world, probably never will be seen by Utena again. Part of her is a little jealous of just how damn easy it is for him to just flick the lock. Maybe there is some emotional turmoil but still, where's the fight.
At least the rabbit, whoever he or she is, is free.]
[ He's never heard that one before. Never has he been told he's done anything right. Not by family and certainly not by anyone else who knows the history between he and Rukia. Those words should make someone feel better, shouldn't they? They don't.
But there comes a time when one must stop fighting and after over forty years of it, he'd rather concede on his own terms and do his first and last good deed to her than drive her away and be faced with a hatred she should not be weighed down with. ]
I wonder. [ Was it right? Will it make a difference? Only time will tell. ]

[ Oh Dawn. The two of you don't speak in how long and this is what you say? ]
She is a special rabbit.
[ Well, she is. He isn't lying about that. ]

She might come back. It doesn't have to be forever.
[Is this a metaphorical rabbit? This is a metaphorical rabbit, isn't it? And that hand? That voice?]
A-are you okay?

I am fine.
[ He really is. It's... kind of liberating, actually, if one takes the time to consider the things that led up to this. ]
I do not think I'll be needing ginger today.

[Again, she thinks more of Anthy than of anything, stuck in the gilded bird cage called a garden.]

[ Especially his world. How innocent her view seems to be. ]
