Came up short

Well, around came the championship last night (okay, Tuesday night). I'll be brief: the amazing Wrong Trousers (The Mütnant, ratravarman, muzikmaker21, leiacat, and myself; a formidable quintet) battled up from second place for most of the first half to firm control of first place after acing the "Name That Tune" segment, and were ahead by eight points going into the final question - only to get passed on the last, traditional Final Jeopardy!-style, put-these-things-in-order question. We bet zero points and didn't get the answer right anyway, so it was simply a matter of betting that the other two teams didn't get it right (the fourth place team could have tied us if they got it right and bet the full twenty points). So "Amanda Huggenkiss", who stacked something like twelve people onto their team for the final (we were by far the smallest team of the finalists), managed to get the order correct* and became the champs, with us in second. We crossed the floor and gave out the handshakes, and everything was fine.** While they won $400, we ended with $100, which helped pay for our meal and then some, and a lovely time was had by all.

We'll get 'em next time.***

* "Put these things in order from oldest to most recent: the first Academy Awards, the first Indy 500, the first Miss America Pageant." We had two almost exactly, but couldn't place Miss America.

** The third place team, who had a lovely prize of steak knives (which loses a bit of zing when it's not handed to the second place team), congratulated us afterwards and really didn't talk to the winners at all...they confided that they didn't even recognize half the ringers they brought in, while we were, according to them, "kicking ass every night".

*** Interestingly, next week is a non-tournament game, so Rick, the quizmaster, is having a bit of fun with it and asking folks to bring in trivia questions of their own.

trivia night, night out
