More on the cat

May 03, 2006 00:35

Kid-2 went along with me to the trivia contest tonight. We both had a good time, even though we ended up in 5th (out of 10 teams, tied for the lowest we've ever gotten; what can I say? We had an off-night!) Still in first overall in the tournament standings.

The cat is back home for the nonce. Quartering the cat at the vets was too much money, so home he went...he's meowing a lot and clearly in some kind of distress, though if he could learn to stay put I gather it wouldn't be as bad for him. Then again, he's never had to before.

The cat and I are an unusual case. He's probably the cat whom I've been with the longest, yet I'm not a cat person. Spring was probably the cat that was most "mine", and she had some issues. Random, efbq's cat, was quite possessive, and he and I had to come to an understanding once I married her. Grendel, once he reached a certain age, didn't have quite their personality...though in his kitten years he did earn the name of Grendel because he thought he was a monster; his canonical full name remains "John Grendel the Great Grey Hunter I'm a Big Ferocious Monster Really I Am". In fact the cat and I haven't gotten along for years, I think, though in recent, waning years he's become much more personable...and I've always respected that he's been Kid-1's cat - much more so than Kid-2's, which really has been fine with Kid-2, who only in the last few years has gotten over a fear of animals in general, no matter what kind they might be.

Of course, as I write this, Grendel has, with great effort, pulled himself to the back room where I am, just to lie about a meter away and studiously not pay attention to me as I sit in front of the computer.

We'll have to see what's up tomorrow.

EDIT: It looks like tomorrow morning we'll be taking him back and having a final evaluation made of his condition after being on the drug for a while. It does not look good, at all.

I'm going to be at rehearsal all night tonight, which means that efbq will be the one telling the kids the fact that he will not recover, which leaves only one humane option.

cats, family
