Power steering and cars

Jan 02, 2007 15:07

Something has been terribly wrong with my power steering pump for the past couple of months. The problem has magnified in the last two weeks; I find myself refilling the fluid after every few trips just so I won't have to hear that wretched weaning noise whenever I turn.

I know the parents probably wouldn't be up for the idea of getting it fixed with the money situation, and I'm afraid to pour money into the car because I'm trying to save for a new one.

I'm looking at cars in the sub-$15,000 range. I want a new car; my dad has always bought used cars, and every single one has needed or needs some sort of repair. Not that even new cars don't have their problems - I just want to avoid as many as possible.

If I can't get a new car (which is likely), I want something 2003 or above.

I'm also looking for practicality. Part of the reason why I want a newer sedan rather than fulfilling my dream of having a '99 GSX Eclipse is for space issues. You can only pack so many items in the back of a Porsche 944 before you can't see through the rear-view mirror.

Gas mileage would also be in this category. Gas is fucking expensive.

Among the prospective cars include the new Honda Fit Sport. The Fit has a wealth of nice standard features, and it doesn't look horrible. As far as used cars, it would be nice to get a Mazda 3s, or even a 6 if I could afford it. Then there's the Volkswagens: my roommate Sherman has a 2004 (2003? I don't remember) VW Passat. I think it was around $19,000, but it's loaded.

Ah well. I have a couple months to save before I do any actual consideration, so I'll sleep on it.
