A haiku:
Stripped, sanded, reglued,
Will soon be sky blue again
Now: a naked chair.
I've had this chair since I was a kid. My parents bought it for me because we didn't own a chair that fit the desk you can see sitting behind it. It has a twin, currently sitting in my parents' laundry room. That one's sky blue, as this one was until last month.
Why bother stripping it? The old paint was coming off, and as it turned out, there were two layers underneath. One of which was forest green. I reglued two of the dowels last night, and the seat this morning. (It's also held on with screws, hence no clamps.)
You can't really tell here, but the chair has a lot of nicks and dings, and I couldn't get all of the first coat off. (Could be primer: it's white.) And I wasn't too kind with the putty knife. And the feet are pretty beat up. And the seat doesn't even have that hollow seat-shape to make it more comfortable. But it's solid wood (pine, I think), and I like the style of it, so I'm gonna give it a new coat of blue paint and hopefully keep it around another twenty/twenty-five years.
The desk it was bought for is gonna get spruced up next spring. The trim has the remains of an old paint-job lurking in the crevices. I want to get those off, and then polish it up. It needs some gluing, too. But I'm slightly nervous: veneers are tricky. Not that I'm going to even attempt to fix the veneer, but the desk has had a rough life, and I don't want to make it worse. (Which is why I did the chair first.) Here's hoping!
