So Elisabeth Sladen died.
It's weird. I mean, she was right in the middle of making The Sarah Jane Adventures, with Season Five on the way, and they say it was cancer.
It hits home for me a bit, because the character of Sarah Jane Smith was an unexpected role model for me. Older single woman, intelligent, courageous, capable, not perfect but definitely admirable, and stylish in a way that was practical (and not, y'know, plastic). Since SJA started, I've watched every episode, and I've said more than once that if I never marry, I want to end up like her. (And I am completely jealous of her attic.) The mere fact that they brought her back, and not just brought her back but gave her an entire show is both testament to her acting ability and to the fact that young pretty waifs are not required for action roles. She was great in the old show (I love the way she'd make faces when she was in the background) but she in SJA, she shone.
I'm sure she means more to older Who fans than me: I read an interview once where David Tennant said that the first moment he really felt like he was the Doctor was at the readthrough for "School Reunion", when Sladen said his name. And this has got to be absolutely awful for the "kids", Tommy Knight, Anjli Mohindra, and Daniel Anthony, who've been working so closely with her these past few years. I'm just a 'new' fan, but characters like Sarah Jane are so rare that the loss is sharp.
Thank you, Ms. Sladen. You were wonderful.
