So I had to take my new glasses back.

Well, temporarily.  See, since I picked them up on Wednesday, I kept getting headaches.  At first I thought this was because they needed adjusting, so I spent a lot of time fiddling with the nosepieces.  And yesterday I got the earpieces adjusted because they were too tight.  But on the drive to work today, I kept fiddling with them, as if the lenses weren't positioned right and nothing I could do would fix them.  And then at work, more headaches.

Now, I'd bought a different kind of lense this time.  Last go-round, I'd got this new brand of plastic called EV4, but when ordering them this time, the sales lady said that the simpler polycarbonate lenses would be both (slightly) cheaper and thinner.  So I said, hey, why not, and got those.  Well, today I looked up to see what was so special about EV4 lenses in the first place, and the website said that their main advantage is lower distortion.

As those of you with bad eyesight know, thick lenses create distortion around their edges.  There's a compression effect, and everything goes just that little bit out of focus.  Well, upon comparison between the old and new lenses, I determined that the EV4s lived up to their hype: the distortion is less, and starts further away from the center of the lense.  And as I spend a lot of time working on two monitor screens, this makes a crucial difference in my range of sight.

That, and fifteen minutes after I'd switched to my old glasses, my headache went away.  (I had not taken any painkillers, either.)

So I took my glasses back to the shop, and after ruling out a bad prescription, they offered to get me the EV4s so long as I paid the difference.  Which I will happily do.  They will be a little bit thicker, and the anti-glare coating won't be as nice, and until then I'm wearing my old, scratched-up ones, but dang it, it's worth it.

I am a frugal person.  I won't spend a lot of money if I don't have to.  But I wear glasses every day, from the moment I get up to the moment I go to bed (barring showers) - they are the accessories of my face, seen by everyone I meet, and without them I am housebound.  I may not wear designer shoes or carry designer purses, but I will gladly buy designer frames, and fit them with the very best lenses.

glasses, argh
