So, Christmas! I s'pose I ought to post about it at some point...
Christmas Eve service was surprisingly packed at church. In all my memories, it tends to be a bit empty, seeing as how most folks have some home church somewhere to be getting to. But it seems that our church is finally old enough that kids who grew up there have moved on to other churches and our church is now their home church. So I saw lots of folks I hadn't seen in ages. Robyn was there, quite surprisingly (for her, too) - she'd been scheduled to work that night (she's a nurse) but then the hospital called and said, "Have the night off! Merry Christmas!" So she came with her parents. (Her husband did not get the night off. Because apparently people must go to Blockbuster on Christmas Eve.) And then Daniel's best friend Kevin and his family were in town, so we had them over to our house afterwards, and since it wouldn't make sense not to, we invited Kevin's parents (who are old friends of our parents) over too, so for the first time in my life we had folks who weren't family over for Christmas Eve. Which was a bit odd, but the kids and dads and grandpas had such fun making a ruckus in the basement.
Christmas Day was equally fun. The boys all went sledding and Toby wiped out, and apparently enjoyed it. David had said that he'd like to read more this year, and got a boatload of books. (That'll teach him!) Mom and Dad got a digital camera and promptly filled up the memory card. (Funny moment of the day, Dad realizing that the memory card was full and Mom telling him, "Get rid of the ones with [my name]." - apparently they'd had the camera aimed at me when they tested it's capabilities, but it still gave me the chance to tease her mercilessly.) And we had way too much food. And we called the grandparents. And Liam spat up over everything. (He does that.) And Toby danced for the camera, which was hilarious.
And then, on Thursday, we geeks watched "Voyage of the Damned." We loved it. I think we were only fifteen minutes in when Trudy said, "When does the box set come out?" Minogue was cute and sweet as Astrid. I loved the bit where she's on Earth and is so delighted to be on an alien planet for the very first time. You could see how the Doctor liked her instantly, which made it that more heartbreaking when she died. Though it was obvious she would die the minute she asked to travel with him.
There were any number of awesome and/or funny moments. London evacuated! The Doctor exploding a champagne bottle with the sonic screwdriver! Mr Copper's version of Earth history and culture! ("The Great God Santa... and his wife Mary" ::dies::) Phoon admitting how she'd got the tickets! Bannakaffalatta! (How come he got the Doctor to use his whole name and Romanadvoratrelundar never managed?) Killing droids with EMP! (Isn't that Stargate's schtick?) The Doctor outthinking the Host so he could be arrested! And that bit where he guessed "42"! Alonso! (I was really happy he lived. Poor guy spending most of the episode with a bullet wound!) The Titanic buzzing Buckingham Palace! (In what other show could you possibly have a starship buzz Buckingham Palace?) And, y'know, the Doctor's speech was cheesy, but I loved it. KASTERBOROUS! Haven't heard that name in a few decades. And when we first saw Max Capricorn's vehicle, I did honestly think, "Davros?"
Poor Doctor, though. He's lost another one. That bit where he's trying to fix the teleport and yells "I can do anything!" was heartbreaking, as was that tender kiss he gave Astrid's image before she disintegrated. Mr Copper was right, too. If the Doctor could choose who lived and who died, he would be a monster.
Mr Copper was pretty awesome, too. I was so happy for him that he, too, survived, and will live out his life on Earth. Loved the line about "it's just France and Germany, only Britain is Great." Hah! Who needs subtlety?
In all... perhaps not the best Christmas Special, but a really awesome Who episode regardless.
