I'm not a religious person nor am I well acquainted with religious texts, and both of these factors probably will contribute what you might think of The Reaping (2007). However, I watched it tonight (in fact, the credits are just running) and I have to say I really liked it. The film effects, particularly of cutting and lighting, really struck me. The film is (as you might remember from trailers or assume from the title) about the actualization of the biblical plagues. Katherine (Hilary Swank) is a woman who has been ordained but five years prior lost her family and similarly lost faith in God. Her mission now is debunking supposed "miracles." (Early on she states she has investigated about 45 so-called miracles and each had a scientific explanation.) She also teaches.
She and her partner (? what could you call him?) Ben are approached by Doug, a man from a small town tucked away in a bayou of Louisiana. The river has turned red - apparently blood. Katherine rejects the invitation to investigate at first until Doug reveals that townsfolk are whispering about blaming a twelve-year-old girl.
It's an interesting movie with pretty engaging plot. I suppose there's elements that could have been predicted, but I still felt surprised (I do tend to get caught up in the movie itself and not question things too closely while watching for the first time). And there was definite tension. I actually squeaked at one point, lol!
So yeah, I totally recommend it. Ben is totally my favorite character, but I really like Katherine, too.
