Writing Challenge #1

Jan 23, 2008 12:21

For my new and shiny writing group!

Note: I'm not filtering this first challenge in case people become jealous of the incredible intellectual fun we're having and want to join. <3

Challenge, deadlines, and all other stuff included under the cut.

Challenge: The Inanimate Object Speaks!
Deadline: This is actually not hard and fast for this one, as I am just figuring out how things work. February 3rd will be the last day to post (also, would you like me to keep it on this thread or make a new one for that express purpose?) After that we can have a week to read/workshop.
Length: No tomes. Stay under 1,000 words. Other than that, keep it like a mini-skirt: long enough to cover the point, short enough to keep interest.
EDITZ: For posting purposes, I will post a new thread on the due date of the challenge at which people can either post their work or post a link to their own journals (mainly so it is all in one convenient place).

Details: The challenge this week is to narrate an event or experience from the perspective of an inanimate object. It can be either from fanfiction - a potions vial can remark on being fondled by Snape - or original work - your poor living room couch can feel very offended at being so put upon. If it has a voice already (i.e. the Sorting Hat), don't use it.

WHY SCI, WHY?!?: Far from being just a POV exercise, you have to consider how the voice of something that does not have a clearly defined speech pattern sounds like. Also, this is for all you description people - how does the world look from the point of view of your living room carpet or Kyouya's laptop? What awareness does the object have of itself? Does your object speak in Standard English, does it hate commas, does is speak in images rather than concrete ideas?

Have fun, be absolutely crazy and creative - this is supposed to be way experimental and designed to break you out of your comfort zones.

Questions, Comments, Assertions, Dissertations? COMMENT AND THY SHALL RECEIVE.

Go wild!
