So, for a change of pace, stick around for some book awesomesauceness. Yes, I can say such abominable neologisms because I am no longer a real English teacher.
I actually copied down all of the books I read last year, and I've narrowed this one down to two out of a possible ninety six but I've already done an extensive review of The Book Thief elsewhere, so I'm going to spread the love for this particular book.
Most people know Shirley Jackson either from her superb short story "The Lottery" or her novel The Haunting of Hill House, but I think this is her masterpiece novel. It is a bizarre, quirky story narrated by an 18 year old girl who sounds as if she is about eight. It is effortlessly creepy in a way that just prickles under your skin as you read it.
Jackson is always brilliant in estranging the familiar and using ordinary images to bring out the underlying terrors that lurk in conformity and "polite" society. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is no different.
Some day, in my new found free time, I might try to adapt it to a screenplay on an ash colored pallet...
