First of all, a Very Happy Birthday to
ryf! May the new year of your life be much better than your last!
My brother visited us yesterday and had lunch with us. Among other things, we chatted about computers, and my brother showed me a nice tweak.
I hate it that when I insert a CD or USB stick or whatever, Windows instantly starts to evaluate the content, executes autorun files or pops up a dialog asking what I'd like to do with the files on the disc/stick. Some new kind of USB stick even starts to install things on the computer as soon as they're connected, to make it look like owner's own PC, without asking for permission first.
Well, there's a way to prevent such behavior: disable the Autoplay functionality.
And this is done the following way:
Run the windows program gpedit.msc (Edit Group Policies)
Select Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System
Double click on the entry Turn off Autoplay
Enable it (Yes, to turn Autoplay off, you have to enable the turn it off switch)
Select to turn off Autoplay on All drives and apply the new setting.
Unfortunately, this program apparently is only part of Windows XP Professional, not the home edition, but fortunately this is exactly what I have on my laptop, so yay!
A few days ago, I stumbled over my notes about the Xmas vacation that I had never finished to turn into a holiday report. Well, I did so now, together with a few pics, and posted them as
backdated entries.
And while I was at it, I did some cleaning up of the tags of my LJ. I think, one of the best improvements that LJ made recently was the autocomplete function in the input field for the tags. I often used tags inconsistently, sometimes as singular and sometimes as plural, sometimes with space between two word tags and sometimes not, and the autocomplete doesn't only save typing time but also prevents such confusions.
