I haven't done a meme for a long time, and I've also had a really hard time writing lately, so I asked for some questions with the hope that they would jump start me. So here we go...
The meme:
Leave me a comment saying "I promise to actually play along"
• I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions
Lawyer, doctor, Indian Chief - which would you want to be and why?
I come from a family of medical professionals... mom, sister and two aunts are nurses, grandfather and uncle were/are doctors, dad was a paramedic, etc. But I get woozy at the site of blood and have an irrational fear (bordering on phobia) of doctors and hospitals. So doctor is definitely out. I wanted to be a lawyer when I was a kid... these days, I'm not so keen on arguing with people. I'm more about us all getting along. So I'm going with Indian Chief. I get to dispense my infinite wisdom and everybody has to listen to me. Well, except for that whole genocide thing.
It's clear you adore being an aunt - why?
You know, I always wanted kids of my own and assumed I would have them. I love kids; I studied Early Childhood Education for a while in college and worked my through college as a nanny. But at this point, it looks like having my own is just not going to pan out. I'm okay with that, mostly, and the older I get, the more I appreciate that being childless allows me a great deal of personal freedom that I am less and less willing to sacrifice. Being an aunt is a good compromise for me. I get to be the adored Auntie Re who brings presents and does special things with my nieces. I don't have to deal with the challenges of child-rearing, just the fun parts.
You are put in witness protection (through no fault of your own :P) - you need to pick a name, a place ot live and an occupation - tell me about them.
I already picked my name... my first name is my given name, but I changed my middle and last name about 10 years ago. I like my name and I would be very sad if I had to change it. Growing up, I always wanted to be a Julie or a Stephanie or something else that everyone could pronounce and could buy personalized stuff for, but since I've been an adult, I really like having a relatively unusual name (even though it still bugs me that almost no one pronounces it correctly). Almost everyone in my family has unusual names... Juna, Dohn, Kari, Xander, Aliette. If I HAD to pick a new name, I'm partial to Genevieve these days, for no reason other than that I think it's pretty.
For place to live and occupation, lately I've been fantasizing about moving to the the town of Hanalei in Kauai and getting a job in a coffee shop or something. In reality, I'd probably need to work two or three jobs to support myself in Hawaii, and I'd make a lousy server, but the idea of being able to leave work and not have my job hanging over my head... just being done for the day... appeals to me. Along those same lines, I've always thought that being a mail carrier would be a pretty nice job, if you had a great route. You get to walk around all day, enjoying a nice neighborhood, chatting with the neighbors, and again, at the end of the day, you've done your job and there is nothing to worry about or lose sleep over.
Pie in the sky career, I'd run a philanthropic organization. Deciding who and what causes to give money to would be awesome. Many years ago, I did work in the grants department of a philanthropic organization, and we used to play a game called "If I was rich, I would give money to X..." Just imagining the possibilities was really cool.
What's your coping mechanism for stress?
Wine.
You are going to plant a garden - which will it be - flowers or vegetables?
If I had to choose one or the other, I'd probably go with vegetables, because much as I love flowers, I love to eat even more. But really, I'd do what I already do, which is an herb garden. Basil, thyme, oregano, mint, parsley, chives, etc. I love having fresh herbs to cook with and they are easy to grow and so much cheaper than buying them.
