Chapter 1  Introduction

Another tender spring night at the dreamy beach of Malibu was coming to an end. Ere the rise of sun, a gentle breeze from the Sierra swept across the campus, unfortunately not able to clean it up.

It was not just an ordinary night, but the celebrations of the Junior Prom at Pacific Coast Academy, the most illustrous boarding school of Los Angeles County, the vestibule of Hollywood, the world’s meeting point of vain dream, unforgivable sins, and devastating disappointment.

Almost none of the participants had found his or her way back to their regular dorm. but they were either loitering on the campus, or lying around in the most absurd places, or committing some perverse business in dark corners and behind dense bushes.

The junior prom night had been a time of great yet vainglorious and blasphemous joy for some, but also of excruciating pains for others.

None of the students had hitherto noticed one of the most eclatant consequences of the passing night:

The monumental sculpture of the founder of Pacific Coast Academy was gone, or, more precisely, exploded, with smithereens scattered all over the campus.

This was the unintentional result of a careless action committed by local nerd girl Quinn Pensky, inspired by her inappropriate boyfriend Logan Reese, a coxcomb of a son of the richest Hollywood producer ... ever!

The two of them had been living in a secret concubinacy during the weeks leading up to prom night, a veil they had lifted only during this evening.

After having outed themselves, Quinn decided not to need any longer all of her scientific equipment, and she had randomly disposed with it, flinging it out of her dormitory room across the campus, not taking care of any expectable consequences.

The consequences were detrimental, as Quinn hosted several explosives in her dormitory room. But the students had been too busy celebrating their junior prom to notice.

And now Quinn and Logan were about performing disgusting deeds behind some dense bushes, unaware of what had been going on. But they were not the only sinful couple on the campus.

Lola Martinez, a promising Hollywood starlet, and her partner in sin, football captain Vincent Blake, were lying hand in hand on a dune at the fringe of the campus. They had been a couple for a few weeks, too, and yet another couple that should never have been. Lola had betrayed this way one of her former friends, Chase Bartholomew Matthews.

A year and a half ago, Vince had bullied and beaten up bushy dweeb Chase Matthews because the latter had denounced him at the school administration for cheating in some history test. Vince had thereupon first been suspended and then expelled. This had been a big deal for the whole school because it was the first time in decades that the football team of Pacific Coast Academy had had a chance to win the state championships, but the suspension of Vince had reduced the formerly fantabulous opportunity to zilch. 1

I have to come back to the fate of the football team a bit later on in order to explain its significance for the school’s alumni, sponsors, and especially for Mr. Leo Bradford, 2 the overloard and son of the foundation father whose sculpture had been destroyed in the unintentional explosion.

But Vince Blake had found mercy in the eyes of Carl Rivers, the dean of Pacific Coast Academy, just one year later.

The person to pull the strings behind this action was hollyeood child star Ashley Blake, 3 the younger sistyer and one and only loyal relative of Vince. She had taught Vince to feign innocence and good will, deceiving this way the responsibles into readmitting him to Pacific Coast Academy.

In all truth, Vincent Blake had never had anything in mind but revenge. But beating him up again would have been a bad idea na djust have got Vince expelled again, making it impossible for him to ever make it into the National Football League. Ashley had deviced a more subtle way for her brother to wreak lethal havoc upon his betrayer and backstabber.

Chase Bartholomew had been absent from Pacific Coast Academy for the last few months and been in England as an exchange student, for a bit weird reasons - along story.

And while awaiting the return of the bushy dork, Vince started stealing his friends, one by one, starting with seducing Lola Martinez. The other former friends of Chase to get sucked into the diabolic plot of the Blake siblings were Logan Reese, Quinn Pensky, Michael Barret, Lisa Perkins, and, most especially, Zoey Brooks, a girl Chase had had a crush on for several years straight, but only fessed up while he had already been on his way to England.

Originally, Zoey had gone to London with her parents, but then she had returned to Pacific Coast Academy upon coming to know about Chase’s feelings for her, but this ha d been too late as Chase had screwed up and followed Zoey to England, effectively trading places with her.

By the way, Zoey had been cheating on Chase during his absence with a tall blond rake named James Garrett. But this was now historuy, or so the kids at Pacific Coast Academy believed.

Chase had returned to Pacific Coast Academy during prom night, and Zoey and Chase appeared to be one happy couple. But neither did Chase yet know about Zoey’s adultery and her treason, nor did Zoey know that he had once paid a girl in order to make her jealous. Their current joy was thus exclusively based on ignorance and thus foul and fragile.

A few other pupils were anything but in a joyful mood.

One of them was Stacey Dillsen, another junior, who had been abused by Logan Reese as a fake prom date in order to hide his inappropriate feelings for Quinn Pensky for as long as only possible. Stacey talked with a heavy lisp and was obsessed with cotton swab sculptures, which made her excessively unpopular among her fellow students. She had hoped for the best and most exciting night of her life, but disappointed when hearing about Logan’s relationship with Quinn. She had thereupon run into a car and lost her lisp this way. But she had regained this impediment after Mark del Figgalo, the driver of said car, had run away with his girlfriend Brooke Margolyn 4 after having danced a few turns with Stacey. The cotton swab fairy was now walking the beach all alone, ready to jump into the waves of the mighty pacific, but she was too feeble to make it there, and thus dropped silently into the wet sand.

The other victim of the night was middle school boy Dustin Brooks, the younger brother of aforementioned blond Mary Sue Zoey. He had been abused during prom night by Quinn Pensky as a fake prom date in order to hide her concubinacy with Logan Reese for as long as only possible. Usually, his protective sister would have prevented him from being shamelessly dishonoured by her friends, but this week, she had been a bit confused because she had had remorses for cheating on Chase woith James, something that resulted in her breakup with James. Dustin had been bitterly disappointed when noting that he had been shamelessly corrupted by Logan and Quinn. Dustin ran across the campus and crashed into a flag staff, dropping unconscious.

Michael Barret, the pal of Chase and Logan, was left in a rather confused mood. He had tried to learn riding his stick swutched car just in order to impress his inappropriate girlfriend Lisa Perkins, as he was known as a reckless coward and thus needed to do something in order to hold her. And he had indeed learned the art of driving such an oldfashioned vehicle, but from some mystery man named Mr. Takato, 5 apparently an elederly Japanese guy and a teacher at Pacific Coast Academy middle school. The learning methods were typicl for Zen teachers. But his girlfriend refused to believe Michael’s story, and deamed him a day dreamer and a liar. Michael was no longer sure as of what to believe, and he wandered the campus aimlessly, looking for his lost mind. He stumbled upon the socket of the monumental sculpture of Old Mr. Bradford, which was already gone. This made him conclude that he had lost his mind completely.

But the rising sun was about to reveil to everyone awake on the campus that Michael was not hallucinating.
