1.1. Into A New Life
Hello, my name is Malika Winter.
I was born and reared in Seattle. I was always a bit loneky and misunderstood, but nothing too evident.
But things changed right before the end of my elementary school time.
I had more and more strange dreams abiut things to happen to my fellow pupils.
None of these events were expected to be very dramatic.
But they turned out true.
Even more, I had the impression of influencing little things with my thoughts, like making forks and knives fall off a table at whim.
But my family and the other pupils were too stupid to believe me.
The guidance counsellor of my school, Ridgeway, suggested to stick me into a very demanding prep school for middle school.
I was totally shocked by this possibility, due to still clinging to my home and castle.
This caused me many nights without sleep.
Things would have been harder without some other girl from my school, Melanie Puckett[
melanie puckett] being sent a similar way, yet for different reasons.
Melanie's family was a gang of ruthless criminals.
Her own twin sister, Samantha, was the worst of all.
A state program allowed for sending kids from those family to boarding school in order to insulate them from the very bad influence of their family.
Melanie was thusly bound for Pacific Coast Academy, a renowned elitary boarding school near Los Angeles.
It had hitherto been restricted to boys only.
But this year, things were going to change.
I finally agreed in joining Melanie.
There were probably worse schools to be sent to.
1.2. My first day
The sun shone brightly , illuminating dreamy Malibu beach near Los Angeles.
So, this was the famous Pacific Coast Academy?
Well, truly, the first impression was that of a spa.
But this was misleading.
I could not trust the evidence.
There was something fishy underneath.
In any case, I was now sharing a dormitory with aforementioned Melanie Puckett.
It could have come a lot worse.
Three girls per dormitory room were normal
But there were not yet enough girls enrolled.
Melanie was a bit sad. She would have wished Samantha to be with her, too.
But I honestly did not miss the rude tomboy.
Melanie wondered, “I want to try out for cheerleading. Will you join me?”
I sighed deeply. Truth said, I hated the whole cheerleading business.
It was so shallow and materialistic, a relict of the era of hunters and gatherers.
But I couldn't let Melanie totally down. I decided to watch her, at least.
1.3. Cheerleading
As aforementioned, Pacific Coast Academy had hitherto been reserved for boys. But like all prep schools of renown, it was proud on the achievements of its athletic teams.
Yet sports teams would have been nothing without cheerleaders to back them up.
At coeducative schools, cheerio squads used to consist almost only of girls.
Boys would have been ridiculed decades after for having been cheerleaders.
The Pacific Coast Academy had tried to make upfor the boys' lack of interest in cheerleading by hiring girls from other schools, especially for big events.
Girls from neighbouring schools were also welcome for other events organised by the Pacific Coast Academy, such as school dances.
But that's really a chapter to return to later on.
Our cheerio coach had also to be hired.
It was Coach Dirga from James K. Polk school in Santa Clarita, a suburb of Los Angeles. She was very demanding.
Melanie moaned a lot. She had wanted to become a cheerio in order to get closer to hot boys.
And the leading athletes of our teams were usually thought as very hot.
The most popular among all of them was Vincent Blake. Inspite of being an weight grader, he was allowed to play in the football team, usually restricted to high school kids. He was also the captain of the soccer team and member of at least three other aspiring sports.
Not much behind him was Logan Reese, only heir of Hollywood csar Malcolm.
His money was as attractive for the girls as his Adonis-like looks and his athletic body.
I didn't care about all that.
But Melanie was totally enthusiastic.
Dana Cruz, an eighth grader with wavy caramel hair, was immediately growing into the rôle of a favourite of Dirga. She was tough, grumpy, and domineering.
It was not easy for the other girls to get along with her.
Courtney[
courtney]
, a high school junior, tried to contest Dana's authority, but she gave up and left the squad.
Two arrogant beasts would have been truly too much to bear.
Thus, finally, Dana Cruz was the uncontested cheerio queen.
Then we were told about an upcoming basketball match between girls and boys.
According to Dana, a pretty teenage blonde named Zoey Brooks had challenged Logan Reese.
Aforementioned jerk ridiculed girls as unable to play any real sports.
Dana would have been easily able to crush the boys' team, but she wanted to stay at peace with them. Finally, she wanted to cheer for the to athletes, including Logan and Vince, and not to make them feel inferior.
Alas, we wanted to watch that match anyways.
1.4. First Dream
Night had fallen.
Traditionally, the first dream in a new environment was to become true.
And I had been right with quite a few otherwise unsignificant guesses based on dreams.
Thus I was now particularly excited.
In my dream, there was a hitherto unknown woman of thirty years, or a bit more. She introduced herself as Kreuftlva[
kreuftlva]
.
I was astonished.
Some mystic aura emanated from the woman.
The lady told me to behold the situation.
I watched her with extreme awe.
Was there a real witch named Kreuftlva?
What sort of name was it anyways?
I could not make sense of it.
But my confidence in the woman grew from minute to minute.
She had apparently got some important message for me. “Malika, I tell you, you are called for performing great deeds of magics, but the spells of magics are in vain, unless you truly believe in them.” Then she was engulfed in a white light and started shimmering into nothingness.
I woke up, all confused. I had not yet been thinking about using spells or any other magic formulae or rituals of any sort. I decided not to talk about the dream unto anyone.
They would have been going to deem me more crazy than back at Seattle.
A long way was to be gone, step by step, one by one.
1.5. Bouncing off the hoop
Itwas the day of the great basketball match between boys and girls.
We sat behind a few elementary kids.
One of them was very keen on Zoey. He must have been a relative or friend of the family. Indeed he was going to turn out as Dustin Brooks, Zoey's little brother.
Alas, the macho codex forbade him to support his sister.
In the beginning of the match, the boys seemed unstoppable.
Logan Reese and his friend Michael Barret were the warrants of male superiority.
Really, only Zoey Brooks was able to play basketball.
And a few minutes later, even this last hope was apparently lost.
Logan had shoved Zoey rudely to the ground.
The charming blonde was even bleeding. But she did not really give up.
I wished to be able to kill Logan with my mere gaze, but slowly and painfully.
Unfortunately he wasn't even punished for his evil deed.
In Logan's faced I recognised the grin of the Antichrist.
On the other hand, Dana was now really upset as well. She grunted and disappeared, but just in order to return after a few minutes with proper equipment for playing basketball.
The girls, viz. Zoey Brooks and Dana Cruz, were now on a roll.
The difference was melting step by step.
Dustin's sibling love had overcome the macho code.
He had even been instigating other boys to rooting for the girls' team.
Less than a minute was left.
The girls were only one point down.
Dana Cruz was in possession of the ball. Could she score from there? She had performed very well so far.
The suspense increased.
The nerves were lying exposed.
Dana aimed from afar.
The ball dropped onto the hoop.
I looked sternly at the ball, almost mesmerising it.
The object of interest tended to bounce off the hoop instead of slipping through it. But, all of a sudden, it appeared to change its mind. Bang! The ball was through.
The final whistle was blown by coach Ferguson[
coach ferguson]
, umpire of the match.
The girls had won by one point and grinned triumphantly.
Logan Reese was in an extremely stinky mood.
Coach Ferguson decided to accept Zoey and Dana into the team.
Zoey was replacing Logan as a point guard.
Dana had not yet decided, as she was already in the cheerio squad and still willing to be the cheerio captain.. She walked away pretty fast.
Admitted, there had been only a small gap between victiory and defeat.
A little breeze could have blown the ball back into the hoop.
But I really had believed in the injustice of the girls' defeat.
Was this the essence of Kreuftlva's words?
Time was going to tell.
1.6. Emotions of food
A few days later, I saw a group of eighth graders having breakfast outside the cafeteria.
One of them was aforementioned Zoey Brooks.
Her friends were named Quinn Pensky and Chase Matthews.
They had also been in aforementioned basketball match, delivering a somewhat less convincing performance.
Chase was a dorkish guy with bushy hair.
Quinn, from Seattle like myself, wore nerdy glasses and braidlets. She was talking about a really strange theory. “Food and drink has got emotions like people.” She fumbled with her friends' breakfast.
Needless to say, Chase and Zoey were not exactly happy about Quinn's quirky demeanour.
But maybe she was not exactly wrong?
Of course fumbling with your friends' bread and butter was not going to make you a lot more popular with them.
I thought about a different way. I had been able to move the basketball by means of telekinesis, without directly touching it.
The reverse would have been telepathy.
Was it really possible to recognise emotions from afar, be it of ?
The consequences would have been enormous.
I had to pant a lot upon the thought of the possibility.
And this was only a start.
1.7. Las Vegas
I met aforementioned Dustin ourt on the campus.
He sobbed. “Can you lend me a few bucks? I'm going to pay them back.”
I sighed.
Life on the campus was expensive.
My pocket change was hardly enough for myself.
But Dustin had got those puppy eyes.
I could spare a fiver. “But never again!”
Dustin bowed. “Thanks! It's a case of emergency. I just had to buy a whole bucket of gummi worms for my spelling bee club. I always get hungry for candy after those bees.”
Bees happen to like sugar, don't they?
Dustin sighed. “Someone should elope with me to Las Vegas and trick the roulette ball to stop at the right place, such as Dana's basketball.”
I went pale.
Of course a ball over a rolling roulette table was much harder to halt at the right spot in the right moment.
I was not able to do that.
Was it even possible? Maybe by believing hard enough?
It was better not to think avbout it.
Then I asked, “aw, you like spelling bees? You must know a lot of words.”
Dustin nodded, chock full with pride and glee.
I wondered, “do you know a word spelled kreuftlva?” Then I pronounced it as in the dream.
Dustin pondered briefly. “I made over 100 points in each bee, but I've never come to hear of any such word, or anything similar.”
“It's OK!” I thanked him again and waved.
The name was still a mystery for me.
Maybe one day?
