Icelandair Cargo Transports Weapons to Georgia
An airplane from Icelandair Cargo transported unloaded rifles from the US to Georgia at the end of last month as confirmed by Gunnar Már Sigurfinnsson, managing director of Icelandair Cargo. The rifles were not categorized as hazardous cargo.
A conflict broke out between Russia and Georgia in August, as Fréttabladid reported.
“We would never participate in such a transport unless it was 100 percent legal and safe. We would never be involved in arms trafficking during a war,” Sigurfinnsson told Fréttabladid.
According to Sigurfinnsson, airlines around the globe are involved in transports like this on a daily basis and no one finds that newsworthy.
“No cargo airline claims that they don’t transport [weapons]. Products like this are for example often transported between the US and Western Europe and even to Iceland when there are military exercises on behalf of NATO and such,” Sigurfinnsson said.
Weapon transport always takes place with complete knowledge and agreement of all countries whose airspaces are being entered, Sigurfinnsson stated. Unloaded rifles are however not considered dangerous cargo, he added. There was no ammunition on board.
Sigurfinnsson said cargo airlines require special permission to transport dangerous cargo and Icelandair Cargo has permission to do so.
