Chapter One Alex Gaskarth POV
Adam sniffs around in his wolf form, trying to catch a scent of anyone following or tracking us. The hunters, and now the Arctos, are after us. We are also another short. Michael stops. Adam gets ridged besides us. It’s then that I smell it. It's not human or werewolf. The smell of a human catches up to us, along with fear. We see a vampires dig his teeth into the neck of a human. Michael hides Cassadee in the shadows. Adam goes with her.
After his meal, the vampire looks up and sees us. He is in front of us in a flash. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a vampire so I have forgotten how fast they are. His eyes flash red. Michael gets into a defensive stance.
"What are you doing here?" the vampire asks. "This is not your territory. I know you're not human."
"We are werewolves and new to the area," I say.
The vampire narrows his eyes. "So you decided to watch me take my meal? You don't smell like a wolf. What pack are you from?"
"We are the last remaining Beothucus. The reason why you can't smell us is because we don't have a scent that you can pick up. We are an old pack."
"So why are you here? This is vampire territory."
"We are looking for the Lupus."
He nods. "I will lead you in the right direction. I am the leader of my coven, the Cinereus. If you are looking for werewolves, be careful when you come upon the Arctos. They may seem trusting, but they are very deceitful, especially when it comes to endangering their pack."
“We know. We had an unfortunate encounter with them. I post a pack member is a fight.”
I let Adam and Cassadee know it's safe to come out. The vampire looks at them questionably and then at us.
"Why aren't you in wolf form?"
"We don't change unless it's a new moon or at will. Nevertheless, can we please move along? We are being hunted and wouldn't like to stay out in the open."
Cassadee lets out a wine and strays behind. Adam and Michael both keep a watchful eye on the vampire and Cassadee to make sure he doesn't mean harm to her.
"Is there something wrong with her?" the vampire asks.
"It was her mate who was killed killed. It took three of the Arctos to kill him. She's also expecting pups soon."
"Then we should hurry along. I know how rare it is for a female to exist in werewolf packs."
He moves very fast, almost to the point where we can't keep up. Vampires are known for their speed and endurance. He stops a few times to catch a scent and then hurries along. We change directions many, many times before he pounces on a wolf. The wolf growls and goes defensive before he backs off.
"Hey, Andrew! Sorry about that. I had to find you."
The wolf still growls and gets even more defensive when he sees us. Adam sniffs the air around and gets even more protective of Cassadee.
"Can we trust this this one?" Michael asks.
"Yeah. This is Andrew Goldstein. He's a part of the Lupus. Even though they do get a bit aggressive when they are in their wolf forms. Naturally, they are a friendly pack. Their leader is very nice...You'll like him." He looks at the wolf. "Are you done hunting? These people need your help. A pretty girl needs protection. She is carrying babies and they are being hunted. Can you take them Rian?"
The wolf looks over at Cassadee. Then he looks back to the vampire. He makes a slight nod.
"Great!" He turns to us. "He'll lead you the way to the Lupus. The thing about them is that they are very friendly, and they are very hospitable towards females. Their leader will make you very comfortable in his home. I can't go past this point."
Andrew makes some sort of notion to have us follow him. The five of us move through the night. It's much easier to follow him than the vampire. We come to a building that doesn't look very much like a home, but we go through an entrance made by wolves. Michael opens the door and we enter. The inside is nothing like the outside. It's gorgeous. Andrew motions us to follow him. We follow him up a flight of stairs and into a bedroom. He nudges Michael and me to follow him. He shows us a room right across the hall. I guess this is where we are going to sleep for the night. Andrew leaves the four of us to ourselves.
"Do you think they will attack us?" I ask.
Michael shrugs. "I don't know. We can't let ourselves trust easily as we did before. We lost Mike. We can't afford any more losses to this pack. However, Cassadee is in a very vulnerable state. We have to make sure she feels safe or she might leave us."
"I know. I'll have a talk with the leader when it's sunrise."
"You should get some rest. I'll stand guard. Adam is probably watching Cassadee. We will not disappoint this pack again."
"Thank you, Michael, but you should rest as well. You've been up for a long time now."
"I'm fine. My concern is you and Cassadee."
"If you insist."
I lie down with a discomforted heart. I am not a strong Alpha, but I was appointed by the last alpha. Michael and Adam respect me enough to let me lead. They are strong, very strong. I can easily trust them with my life, as can Cassadee. I rest my eyes and fall into a restless sleep.
