Alex has been waiting for three days now for Jack to regain consciousness. Needless to say, it’s making the doctors and nurses a bit nervous on his condition, and that is not helping with Alex’s sanity. He has basically only left to eat and shower ones. The nurses have given him an extra blanket the first night he refused to leave. But now, three days and two nights later, Alex is on the verge of losing it.

Alex nearly jumps out of the bedside chair when he hears a knock on the door. He looks up and sees Matt standing there. Most of the other crew members went home after being promised to get a call if anything changed. Matt stayed behind to keep an eye on Alex, though he wasn’t going to tell the younger boy that.

“Alex, you need to get some proper sleep. You’re exhausted.”

Alex shakes his head. “I don’t want to leave Jack. What if he wakes up?”

“You’ve been up for almost three days straight. You need sleep,” Matt says. “You could end up sick and then the doctors will be forced to not let you allowed in.”

Alex hated the logic that Matt presented. He feels tears forming in the corners of his eyes. The exhaustion is getting to him and he is feeling too emotional to hold himself in check.

“I just can’t leave him. He’ll be alone.”

Matt hugs Alex and rubs his lower back. “He’ll be fine. I’ll stay with him if you’d like. I booked a room at the hotel across the street so just in case something does happen, you can rush over here quickly.”

Alex pulls away and nods. “I guess I could use a couple of hours of sleep. I’m really no help to Jack if I’m worked up and tired.”

“You look like you’re about to just kneel over”

“Please call me or come over and get me if there is even the slightest change.”

“I swear it.”

Alex nods. He looks over at Jack’s unconscious form and takes in a deep breath. He bends down and kisses his forehead.

“I’ll be back, Jack-kat. Matt is ordering me to do something I don’t want to, but that’s not anything new. Behave while I’m gone.”

Alex looks back up at Matt and nods. “Thanks. But just a couple of hours, okay? No more than three.”

Matt nods. “Agreed, but I’m giving you an hour and a half for the walk over there and for you to settle in. And use the shower.”

“Okay. Fine.”

Matt hands Alex the card key to the hotel room and gives him a hug. Alex nods his thanks and walks out of the room. Matt sighs heavily and sits in the bedside chair that Alex was occupying not too long ago. He looks over at Jack.

“You’re a little shit. I hope you realize that. The longer you take this little power nap, the more the people who care about you are going out of their fucking minds. You better wake up soon.”

Matt turns on the TV to ESPN. He easily gets entranced in it as a football game comes on. The teams playing aren’t even ones that he cares about, but it’s football. He ends up cheering for the Seahawks, even though they are losing against the Broncos. Half time begins and it goes to a commercial. He takes another look at Jack and sees that he’s awake. Matt jumps slightly, startled.

“Jack! You’re awake!”

“How can anyone sleep through all that noise you were making? And over the Seahawks?”

Matt shrugs. “I got bored while looking after your lazy ass.”

“Well you can turn that shit off and pay attention to me. You know how it’s gonna end anyway.”

Matt turns off the TV and turns his attention to Jack. “Do you remember what happened?”

“Yeah. Bus crashed. Though I feel as though I’m the thing it hit and ran over. Is everyone else okay?”

“Yeah. Most of them went to their homes. Others are still in the area.”

Jack nods. “Cool. An-and Alex?”

“He’s resting back in my hotel room. Do you want me to call him over? I promised I would if you woke up.”

Jack shakes his head. “Not yet. What happened?”

“Well you were the worst injured since the bus crashed right where you were. Everyone was sent here for a checkup. You have a few broken bones and what not. The main concern was the effects that might have been caused by your head injuries, but nothing seems to be the problem.”

“Well, that’s good.”

“You did have everyone worried though. I was worried.”

“I’m sorry,” Jack says.

Matt gets us from the chair and sits down next to jack. He grabs his hand and squeezes it slightly. Jack looks down at his hand and blinks.

“Jack, I was scared you weren’t going to make it. You have no idea. I have never been more scared in my life. I tried my best to be calm, and for the most part I succeeded, but the entire time I was freaking out. All these thoughts were going through my head. And I wanted to blame Alex."

Jack looks up, his eyes wide and mouth agape. “Alex? He didn’t cause the bus to crash.”

“No, but it was his fault that you wanted to be alone. If you weren’t in your bunk when the bus crashed, you would have been okay like everyone else. Alex is the one who pissed you off. But I wanted to blame him. I don’t though. I know everyone has their disagreements. I get that. But Jack, you could have died.” Matt scoots closer to him. He wraps his arms around Jack’s form and holds him tightly. “And if you would have died, I would have hated myself.”

“Why?” Jack asks softly.

"Because, Jack, I care about you, well more than care about you.”

Matt pulls away from Jack and looks down at his lap. He stops himself before he goes too far. He realizes that he went back to holding Jack’s hand, but he doesn’t pull away. He looks at Jack’s confused face.

“The entire crew teases me all the time while you guys are up there on stage. They know because apparently I make it obvious, but not obvious enough. Jack, I’m in love with you. I have been for a long time. It’s ridiculous since I’m not even gay. I don’t understand it, but there’s just something about you that makes me crazy.”

Jack continue to stares at Matt. Matt gets nervous as the silence continues. Jack opens and closes his mouth several times.

“Jack, please, just say something. I understand if you don’t feel the same way. I mean, this band, we’re family. But I just threw myself out there; you can at least give me some sort of answer.

Jack shakes his head. “Matt… I-I can’t feel your hand. I can’t feel anything in my arm.”
