Alex fidgets uncontrollably, feeling too anxious and downright terrified. He hasn’t really spoken in over an hour. He feels as though he might even breakdown if he tries. Words are just not his friend right now. Every time someone new enters the room, he looks up, only to be disappointed but still slightly relieved that it’s not him who is being called for.
Alex looks at his friends, who all look as scared as him, but he’s sure none of them really can understand just how scared he is. They are all shaken up by what has happened. Hell, most have injuries, but they have all be taken care of and looked after. It’s the one person who is not with them that has everyone so worried about. Jack.
There was an accident. The driver lost control of the bus on some out of the way road. For the most part, he did all he could not to make it flip, which thankfully didn’t happen, but he did hit a telephone pole from the side. It just happened to have been where Jack had been sleeping.
It took a good while for an ambulance to come for them. Flyzik and Collusey started to do their best on keeping Jack’s injuries under control. Zack spoke to the operator as calmly as he cool. There wasn’t one person who didn’t have some sort of injury. Buses aren’t the safest places for a crash. But Jack, he had a cut on his head, what looked to be a dislocated shoulder, and a broken foot. Those were just the ones that were obvious. He had still yet to gain consciousness when the medics arrived by helicopter. Jack and whoever had the worst injured were loaded up first and taken care of. A second came not too far behind to take everyone else.
Once at the hospital, the all were given checkups to make sure there wasn’t any internal bleeding or concussions. It didn’t take that long. The one cut Alex sustained was quickly looked over and bandaged. He asked about Jack, but the doctor didn’t know. He was then told to wait with the others in the waiting room. And that’s what he is doing now. Waiting on information about Jack.
“Has anyone called his parents yet?” Rian asked.
“Evan called his mom and dad, and Jeff called May and Joe,” Zack says. “We decided to just keep the updated on news and if, if it gets too serious, they will fly here.”
Rian nods. “Alex, are you okay?”
Alex doesn’t respond. He doesn’t really know how he is feeling. He’s okay for the most part, but with more time that passes without hearing about Jack, the more he is closer to just losing it. He keeps repeating the same words over and over in his head.
Jack is okay. He has to be okay.
“Barakat?”
Everyone looks up at the doctor who just came in. He walks over to them, looking tired.
“Are any of you family?”
“No, but we’re all he’s got right now. We’re part of his band,” Zack answers.
“All of you?” the doctor asks.
“Band and crew,” Jeff corrects.
“Has his family been contacted?”
“Yes, but they are on the East coast. They won’t be able to be here for at least a few hours.”
“All right then. We usually don’t do things this way, but the situation is different. Mr. Barakat is stable. He suffered some minor head injuries, a broken wrist, and possibly some nerve damage in his left arm from a puncture he had. We relocated his shoulder s and the fracture in his foot was placed in a cast. He still has yet to gain consciousness and that is what is most troubling. Until he comes around, there really is no telling what was truly affected where motor skills or memory loss has been affected by the head injuries.”
“Me-memory loss?” Alex chokes out.
“It’s just a pre-caution to look for. That doesn’t mean it’s true. But the longer he is unconscious, the more likely it is.”
“And what about the nerve damage?” Zack asks.
“That is also a pre-caution. There really is no telling if it’s minor or server, but no matter there is treatment to repair it as long as the nerves weren’t too badly damaged.”
“Is there a reason why Jack hasn’t woken up yet?” Rian asks.
“There isn’t just one cause to that. We did find traces of alcohol in his system which could be a contributing factor. Does he drink in access amounts?”
“Um…we’re all guilty of that. Every night just about is a party for us. But I’m not sure how much Jack drank. He was already feeling ill,” Zack answers.
“Jack drank no more than two beers before he went to sleep. He didn’t take any sort of medication either. Jack kind of over worked himself at last night’s show and it made everything worse I think. This morning he claimed to have not been feeling any better. We just let him sleep.”
“I see,” the doctor says. “Well, he is being placed in a room right now. You may be able to go see him in a bit. But we’d like to be notified if he wakes up at all.”
They all agree. Alex sighs heavily. Jack’s okay.
Alex is the first one to enter the room when the nurses say that it’s okay. He slowly enters. He looks at Jack and he just wants to cry. Even though he was given a list of all of his injuries, Alex just did not expect to see him so bandaged up. He approaches Jack’s pale sleeping form with caution. He sits down on the edge of the bed and hold onto the one hand that’s not in a cast.
“Jack? Hey, it’s Alex. I don’t know if you can hear me. Um…Everyone else is okay. We just got away with some scrapes and bruises. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Matt is probably going to start canceling the rest of the tour and out next UK one. But that doesn’t really matter much to me. You’re alive at least. That is what matters. I’m sorry I was such a dick to you. I’ll apologize again when you wake up. I feel as though I’m the one to blame for your injuries. If I-“ Alex feels a sob trying to break through but he holds it back. “If I hadn’t had been such a dick, you wouldn’t have gotten pissed and wouldn’t have spent all day in bed.”
Alex hears a knock on the frame. He drops Jack’s hand and looks up. Zack is standing in there, looking as grim as Alex feels.
“Alex, it’s not your fault,” Zack says. “No one could have prevented Jack from getting hurt.”
“It sure as hell doesn’t feel like that. We had a fight and then he ignores me only to get fucked up.”
Zack shakes his head. “You are not to blame. I’m sure Jack will tell you the same thing when he wakes up.”
Alex nods. “I need him to tell me that.”
“He will soon enough. But I came n here to tell you the others are going to get a bite to eat. Do you want us to bring something back, or do you want to come with us.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“I’m sure you are.”
Alex shrugs. “You can bring something back. I don’t want to leave Jack.”
“Alright. I’ll see you in a bit. Call if anything happens, okay?”
Alex nods and Zack leaves giving a friendly pat on the back. Alex sighs heavily and turns back to Jack.
“Please, Jack-kat. You’ve got to let me know if you’re okay. I need you.”
