The Wily Chameleonshirt

Have you ever purchased an article of clothing in a store based on the color, only to bring it home and find that it's an entirely different color?

I've seen this a couple times. Most recently, I bought a very nice forest-green shirt off of the Sale rack at Macy's as part of a partial work wardrobe upgrade. I also bought a couple pairs of slacks it would go well with, one tan and one dark brown.

I got home to find that the shirt was dark brown when not viewed under fluorescent lights. This kind of kills my ability to wear it with the dark brown pants, because I will look like a walking turd if I venture outside of the basement rooms we occupy. It goes well enough with the tan slacks, but I would really prefer that the shirt maintained a consistent color.

Does anyone out there know why a clothing manufacturer would use these color-changing fabrics? I can kind of understand taking that approach for more hip clothing, but long-sleeve button-down shirts are generally worn with slacks and with an eye to not look like an idiot at work.

At any rate, it became quite clear why it was on the sale rack.

And yes, I'm well aware that caring this much about my pants coordinating well with my shirt calls my masculinity into question, but I'm secure enough to share it with you all.

tidbits, work
