Spark

“Not a real girl. Sinew and blood all tied up in metal.”

The woman, half hidden by shadow swayed, the hem of her velvet gown grazing the puddle at her feet. She cast no reflection.

Cameron tilted her head in curiosity. She had no time for this.

“Vampire.”

The woman laughed the sound of it tinny and high echoing off of the brick walls and falling hollow.

“Clever metal girl.”

Cameron turned to walk away, she hadn’t the time for this, and her mission was not to kill this vampire. The quiet voice caught up with her.

“I can’t see you. Fire in the sky and the boy meant to save the cattle.” Her laughter trickled through the alley again. “You don’t even know who you are.”

Cameron stopped and turned half way to look at the vampire.

“I know who you are.”

The woman stepped out of the shadows, weak yellow light reflecting off of her alabaster skin, her long dark hair. She clutched a doll to her breast, small gloved hands cradling the thing.

“The stars are quiet, not a peep. Miss Edith cries, she is so sad, the stars won’t talk to her.” She glided closer to Cameron and peered into her eyes. “She’s been naughty and now the stars won’t play.”

The vampire circled around her, moving languidly in the moonlight. “There is no spark in you.”

Cameron tilted her head as if to ponder that and nodded. “I don’t have time for this.” Her eyes flashed blue and with one movement of her hand the vampire was thrown out of her way. The weight of the terminator’s footsteps filled the alley.

Drusilla sat up in the puddle and picked up the doll, its hair now wet and its dress muddy. Gingerly she cradled the doll all the while humming.

“Shhh…Miss Edith has been so naughty. Mustn’t be impatient, the world will burn soon enough.” She picked herself up and dancing lightly into the dark again still humming.
