1. Warriors
“Who’s that?”
Morris is as usual salivating after some girl who doesn’t know he exists. John tears his eyes away from his book and stares at the crowd of girls chatting animatedly across from them. Cameron, watchful and silent also looks.
“Slayers. Supernatural warriors destined to fight the forces of darkness.”
Both John and Morris turn to look at her. Off of their incredulous expressions, she smiles that chillingly human smile that always makes John forget and shrugs her shoulders.
“Or so I heard.”
She gets up and gathers her books in her hands and gives John one of her long, meaningful looks.
“I’ll be in the library, studying.”
She walks away and John shakes his head in wonder. Morris is still gazing at the crowd of girls.
“You know man, your sister is seriously twisted.” He smiles to himself and grabs his bag. “I like that.” He waves and disappears into the crowd.
John stays there for a minute longer and then races to catch up with Cameron.
“You weren’t joking.”
She looks at him from the corner of her eye.
“I never do.”
2. Vague and Cryptic
“Do you know her?”
Cameron has been staring at the woman several tables away.
“So do you.”
John turns slightly, but he sees nothing but a mass of long, curling golden hair. She laughs and in doing so turns half way towards them and John looks his fill of pale, smooth skin and a soft cupid bow mouth. She catches him looking and the laughter slips and her large green eyes are curious before she turns away.
“Your heart rate has accelerated. You reaction to her will not change.”
He blushes at Cameron’s bluntness, at the oblique texture of her words and keeps watching the sunlight play in lush, golden hair.
“Tell me what you know about her.”
Cameron grows still for a moment and she too studies the mass of golden hair.
“She’s the best human being you know.”
John looks at her curiously.
“What does that mean?”
Cameron keeps staring as the blond rises, accompanied by a tall brunette and a woman with red hair, all three have shopping bags in hand. Cameron watches them walk across the street to a sedan with tinted windows. Watches them fight for the keys until the taller brunette snatches them out of the blonde’s hands and smiles smugly.
“She’s a secret.”
The way Cameron says that sends chills down John’s spine.
“That doesn’t explain who she is.”
Cameron watches the car drive away.
“She’s the one girl in all the world.” Cameron closes her eyes. “Or she was. Not now. But she will be again.”
John almost growls in frustration.
“I did not know you could be programmed to be vague and cryptic.” Cameron just looks blankly at him.
“You programmed me.” There is no humour in her voice, but John still smiles until Cameron’s low monotone reaches him. “She doesn’t like vague and cryptic either.”
She looks at him as if expecting an answer only to have her human mask slip on and rising she calls over her shoulder to him. “We’re going to be late.”
