Commentary about
this post and the distasteful statuette has been making the rounds of LJ and the internet. Some people may like that sort of crap, but I just find the statuette offensive. As
brown-betty pointed out "She's bending over to make every orifice sexually available to the viewer. In case orifices don't turn your crank, her breasts are available for frottage. In case you might worry about her super-strong husband, she's not wearing a wedding ring. In addition, she's doing a menial and unnecessary domestic task to signal her submission. Hotcha!" And if you happen to miss the frottage potential, why, she's even wearing a pearl necklace. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. ~rolls eyes~
I
also find the male defensiveness that's showing up in comments to
devildoll's post and on
other blogs just as distasteful.
Some of the men are whining about women taking offense where they shouldn't take offense and claiming that women should stop shouting about stereotypes and and oppression and sexism and misogyny and just get back in the kitchen and make them a sammich, dammit. So, as a woman who generally doesn't read comic books, let me tell those men a little about stereotypes. The general public's view of the typical adult comic book reader is that of a young male dweeb who wouldn't know what to do with a woman if he had one, and who spends way too much time and money on what's considered by that same general public to be a ludicrous and childish hobby. You think that's enough stereotype for those guys? Because guess what? That offensive piece of shit statuette just reinforces that dweebish, incompetent stereotype.
As for the men who are sitting there all comfy in their male privilege, I don't have much else to say except that no matter how much you may want to, you don't get to dictate what women think. You don't get to dictate what women post. You don't get to dictate how women act. You don't get to dictate what women like or what women are offended by. Telling women that a few beefcake pics of Batman or Superman or Spiderman should be equal to decades of offensive, misogynistic portrayals of Wonder Woman, Supergirl or Marvel Girl doesn't cut it. You want to sexualize characters for no fucking reason except that you like to masturbate over look at anatomically impossible drawings? You want to pander to male privilege fantasies? Go right ahead, but stop whining about how the icky girls are harshing your squee, because dude, this girl doesn't give a shit.
