I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for being thoughtful, patient and kind in helping me with my crazy problem with Internet Explorer today on my Windows XP laptop. Here is the update! :) Some of you may know some of this already, from my comments to your comments in my journal, but here it is publicly...
I deleted all the temporary files AND all the cookies IE had been storing. I think it's been a long time since I did that, so it was good anyway. I also ran a complete system scan using my
PC -Cillin 2006 program, which updates, scans and protects against viruses, worms, spyware, adware, malware, data miners, etc.
And finally, I took a few minutes to do a Google search on the topic of IE having to shut down for no apparent reason and giving that error window. I found a few websites where people were describing some small little application or file or program called yshortcut.dll. They also mentioned yshortcut.exe. Most folks said their problems cleared up when they manually deleted these two things (using the Windows search function). I think these are things that come from Yahoo. I say "things" because I don't know if I should call them "programs" or "files" or WHAT!! (I'm not very familiar with this stuff)
Anyway, between all of the stuff that I did above (plus re-starting, of course!), the problem has not come back all day! :) I'm almost afraid to say that, lest I "jinx" it and it happens again! But of course I know there's no such thing -- at least not where computers are involved! *chuckle*
Thanks again to all the cool folks who commented with tips, advice, or just support. :) I really appreciate it!
