Yipes. I am still covered in sand bits, very very fine sand bits. And I didnt sleep in the oais, actually. I ate dinner there and then went for a midnight dune climb with two other people who wouldnt summit with me, and I didnt think I should do it with no buddy. Frustrating but oh well.
Then, as camp didnt look that fun, what with music but no dancing, I went off to go chill a ways off where I could hear the drums but no talking, and see very very little, as it was very dark, being cloudy and moonless. Lost one of the guys, so ended up with the aryan poster boy for the rest of the night. I really miss Hannah, the British girl that was part of our little group before. She just rounded things out a little more, and hugged me a lot. Josh will hug me, but its a bit alkward, and the two of us have a ton of fun but are a little antisocial for our own good. Anyway, so we decided we didnt want to sleep and made a pact to stay awake until the sun came up. We saw people coming out to smoke pot, the berbers partying, and chasing off a bandit, but nobody saw us. coolness. it was a great deal of fun, and very funny at moments, which was sorta odd bc with the boyfriend or whatnot it would have been most terribly romantic, but the sheer enormity of the "look how romantic this would be" kept sending us off into fits of giggles at the way the desert seemed to be hitting you over the head, going, "beeeeeeeeeeee romancy, I am the sahara!" It really was pretty amazing, I kept thinking I must be in a movie or on a set.
I also kept having CofDune moments, punctuated to Joshs great confusion with statements such as
"I AM desert power"
"My skin is not my own"
and the occasional cry of
"Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeto!"
and "Send men to summon ...WORMS!"
Then around 4am the wind started blwoing, and I started making alarmed noises about sandstorms, to which Josh annonced THOSE turn the horizon black, to which I punched him but stayed out until the berbers started running for shelter, and so did we. Shoes in hand...
Oh, and it RAINED. On me, sqeeeeeeeeeeee! One of the girls who slept inside got stung by a scorpion, goes to show you doesnt matter whatcha do. Shes fine but it hurt like all hell.
My camel was pretty nice, I figured out a decent way to ride it. They BARK like dogs crossed with cows though. You know the Sand People in Star Wars? Camel noises. Yep. All the way.
