From the start, Stella makes a point of taking Lindsay out for drinks each week.
New job, new city-Stella gets it, the stress Lindsay’s put herself under. She watches the shell-shock fade, watches Lindsay get her feet on the ground. After the first frenetic day, Lindsay narrows, locking herself under a tight, thin layer of control-and this is why Mac hired her.
Still, three months into the job, and Lindsay goes glassy-eyed every time the corpse of a young woman turns up in the morgue, whether it’s her case or not. Stella glances behind Hammerback, to where Lindsay stands with crossed arms and lips pressed together. Stella doesn’t know if it’s identification or something else, and she almost doesn’t care. Few people can shut it all down as efficiently as Mac, and even Mac’s nowhere near as good at it as he thinks.
From the start, Stella makes a point of taking Lindsay out for drinks each week.
New job, new city-Stella listens to Lindsay’s voice loosen and keeps track of all the words Lindsay’s not saying. She watches Lindsay get her feet on the ground. She tries to figure out the difference between unwind and unravel.
And on the nights they’ve both had too much, Lindsay presses up against Stella, hot sweet breath on her neck, her cheek. It’s an effort, but Stella keeps her eyes open. On the nights they’ve both had too much, she leaves soft red marks on Lindsay’s torso, below the curve of her breasts. She keeps her eyes open for the few seconds that Lindsay’s laid bare, mouth wide like a full body shock. She’ll be damned if she doesn’t see it coming this time around-even if it turns out she can’t stop it.
