Character History: Orochimaru’s childhood was spent being raised by severely traditional grandparents in an equally traditional town in southern Japan. It was as he says “Uneventful and frightfully boring.”, his neighbors thought him an odd child and some whispered that due to his pale sickly looks he was cursed. His parent’s untimely death in an accidental fire during one particularly cold winter did nothing to discourage the idea. He was content with his grandfather’s books and simply learned to ignore their mutterings.
Despite his somewhat awkward inability to speak at the same level as his peers, Orochimaru did make two friends in school. One the only daughter of the wealthiest family in the village and the other a boy far more interested in sneaking peeks in the girl’s locker room than actual classwork. He was an exemplary student, praised by his teachers for his brilliance and dedication to details. He soon left the village for a high school in a large city and never looked back. He didn’t need reminders of who he was and the superstitious old fools of the village telling him what to do anymore. He was smart, ambitious and knew how to twist his words to get what he wanted out of someone.
The city, however, was a far different place than his home village. Busier, harsher and bristling with everything he ever dreamed of at his fingertips. Orochimaru absorbed everything from a handful of foreign languages to the subtleties of the human genome, how to avoid being mugged to how to blend in with any given group of people. He was a snake and the entire world an unguarded nest of eggs waiting to be eaten.
Orochimaru soon tired of Japan and it’s ways and with hardly a farewell to those who thought themselves his friends he transferred to a school in America where he began working on achieving a doctorate and citizenship. Those in hand he found himself at a loss for what to do; he had reached the top of his mountain. Universities begged for him to teach, companies wanted him to work in their laboratories and others simply wanted to leech off his fortune.
He turned them all down and instead went to the streets, a common job would serve him just fine while he worked by commission. A semester tutoring here, a few months staring at diseases there paid off his more expensive tastes while arranging holiday flowers and guarding club doors funded the rest.
