Wook: This is Wook77 with this month’s LGBT News segment.

In celebratory news Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell has been repealed officially, even better nothing has happened since. Many news organisations have covered this historic time in LGBT news in the US with a variety of takes on it, from hilarious parodies of equality-foes to in-depth interviews with gay and lesbian soldiers. While some are calling for specific laws protecting LGBT folks from harassment in the military, others are hoping that this harassment falls under the unit cohesion rules that allow for prosecution for anything that affects unit morale from harassment of women, to blacks, to Filipinos. Our transcriptions and episode listings will have a variety of links of inspirational coming out stories of gay soldiers, some will make you laugh, some will make you cry, and some will just make you angry. I’m just so glad that we’ve joined our allies in allowing gay soldiers to serve openly and honestly. If you’re looking for an organisation that forwards equality Out Serve is a brilliant organisation that has done a lot to help LGBT soldiers.

In other celebratory news the NFL has added sexuality to its list of protected classes. Not that I see a lot of gay football players coming out of the closet just yet, but this is a good step forward to fostering an environment where gay men can come out of the closet and maintain a professional football career.

Bisexuality has been verified… in the animal kingdom. Although the joke is that bisexuals don’t exist, just like English majors, researchers have verified that squids can be bisexual. How cool is that?

Another piece of awesome news is that the repeal of DOMA, the Defence of Marriage Act, has its first Republican co-sponsor. This is momentous, if just because LGBT activists and allies need Republican support to get this unfair law repealed in a more timely manner. I applaud Representative Iliana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida for being willing to step up and stand up for equality. She is one of the most outspoken supporters of gay rights in the Republican Party.

In less awesome news North Carolina’s the site of a showdown for equality, with a vote heading to the public for an anti-equality amendment to the state’s constitution. I urge the folks in North Carolina to get out there and let people know that equality is important to them. The amendment goes up for a vote in May.

In more disturbing news at a recent Republican Primary Presidential Debate members of the audience booed a now openly gay member of the military. Personally I was extremely appalled by the lack of patriotism this showed, as that man is laying his life on the line for us irregardless of his sexuality. There is just something morally wrong with booing a soldier simply because he’s gay, especially when you’re supposedly the party of patriotism.

The video of the courtroom antics during the trial of Proposition 8, the marriage equality bill in California that is currently winding its way through the appeals process, has been released just in time for a play and a possible movie to be scripted out.

And proof that video gamers are awesome, as if we needed proof of that, not only will gay romance now be an option in Star Wars: The Old Republic as downloadable content - which woohoo! So excited! - but video gamers have cracked an enzyme in retrovirus diseases such as HIV/AIDS and they did in just three weeks. How freaking awesome is that? Think of what video gamers can do in the future for diseases.

And that’s our LGBT news segment for Episode 23.
