wook77 Welcome to the LGBT News segment for Slashcast Episode 31. I'm wook77 with this month's news.
The big news is that, fine-fucking-ally, President Obama came out in support of marriage equality. It's about goddamned time, in my not-so-humble opinion but I'll take it anyway I can get it. It's mainly due to Vice President Biden so thanks, sir, for forcing the issue! I appreciate it.
In other news and relating to this month's theme, the Million Bigoted Moms- Oh, I'm sorry, the Million Moms group, you know, those idiots that tried to boycott JC Penneys and Starbucks? - have turned their inept ire on Marvel and DC for having the audacity to feature out and proud characters in comic books. I'm certain this will go as far as their previous attempts at boycotting things. And as far as I can tell, however, Astonishing X-Men 50, the one featuring the proposal between Northstar and his longterm boyfriend, Kyle, has sold out in most comic book shops. So, way to go, you idiots, congratulations on another inept piece of boycottery!
Speaking of comics news, DC Comics will be featuring a formerly heterosexual character as a gay character. DC cites President Obama's changing viewpoint on marriage equality as the reason why they were willing to change the sexuality on one of their characters when they had previously announced that only new characters would be featured as gay. There's plenty of speculation as to who it could be and why, but the Advocate has come out in favor of Green Lantern Alan Scott as the likely candidate.
Cynthia Nixon and Christine Marinoni have tied the knot in New York.
The first crop of gay and lesbian graduates at a variety of military academies have celebrated their graduations openly. At balls across the various branches of service, same-sex couples were not only invited, but they were also welcomed. Yayes for repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell!
Nepal has started allowing people to register as "other" rather than the traditional male/female choices. This monumental and awesome policy will allow transgendered or questioning folks to not have to claim a binary gender.
Famed personal trainer, Jillian Michaels, came out of the closet as she and her partner not only adopted a child from Haiti but also had their first baby. Congratulations!
Speaking of coming on out into the light, Food Network star, Anne Burrell, has come out to the world, although she was outed by another chef.
The Price of Salt, an amazing novel that you have got to check out if you have a chance, will be coming to screens soon. Cate Blanchett, my own personal biggest girl crush ever, will be starring.
But there's been some awful happenings, too. A North Carolina pastor called for all gays and lesbians to be put behind an electric fence until they die out. Although he didn't really phrase it that politely. Then again, this is the same dickface that said that gays and lesbians could've been and should've been hung from white oak trees 40 years ago. Fucker...
The president of Zimbabwe said that homosexuality takes away the rights of women, specifically, the right of women to become mothers. Which, honestly? That is so goddamn ridiculous that I can only say "oh fuck you sideways".
Dharun Ravi, the former roommate of Tyler Clementi, who thought it was hilarious good fun to attempt to broadcast his roommate's kisses with a same-sex partner, has been sentenced on all of his charges. He received 30 days in jail, a $10,000 fine, 300 hours of community service and 3 years of probation. Do you think his sentence was fair? Let us know in the comments.
Moscow recently arrested about 40 people during a gay pride parade, as well.
But I'm going to end on some happy notes!
The Pan American Health Organization, a key member in the World Health Organization and the world's oldest health organization, has condemned conversion therapy. The PAHO had a great comment on this condemnation, so I'm gonna just go ahead and quote that: "These practices are unjustifiable and should be denounced and subject to sanctions and penalties under national legislation. These supposed conversion therapies constitute a violation of the ethical principles of health care and violate human rights that are protected by international and regional agreements. Since homosexuality is not a disorder or a disease, it does not require a cure. There is no medical indication for changing sexual orientation. Practices known as 'reparative therapy' or 'conversion therapy' represent a serious threat to the health and well-being - even the lives - of affected people." Brilliant quotation.
A federal judge in California has ruled DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, is unconstitutional. According to her ruling, it violates the equal protection rights of public sector employees. She also ordered, although it is stayed pending appeal, that the California Public Workers Union must stop denying benefits to same sex couples.
Laura Jane Grace, the singer of Against Me! And formerly known as Tom Gabel, has performed her first concert since coming out as transgendered. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Woo hoo!
