Novel Rewrite

Dug into Chapters 1 and 2 and tore out enough stuff that I combined them. Rewrote most of the sections, but now they're very summary-like, so I'm worried about them. This whole chapter 1 thing is kicking my ass, and is very discouraging. I feel like I need the information, but I don't want to get bogged down in it.

Problem: I hate backstory, but without it there is no sympathy for characters that die early.
