Hush Money is the start to a series about Talents, or those who have powers, and it revolves around high school students, which I hoped would give it an X-Men vibe. (Seriously, Marvel, if you put your books in ebook format, I wouldn't have to resort to independent authors.) I'm pretty much anti-indie authors, because I've found them to have worse problems with characterizations, plots, and simple writing errors than published books have. However, I sampled this, found it adequate, and it fit my strong urge for X-Men/Marvel type novels.
It's a fun, quick read, although it's supposed to be superhero romance, specifically about the setup between Joss - who can move objects with her mind - and Dylan, who turns invisible. It also manages to get Dylan's best friend Marco - super-strong - involved, although he has less than honorable intentions.
Joss's family is kind of a mess, too, so that's another nice wrench thrown into the plans. Her sister is another Talent, and her father isn't quite insane, but may have issues when he gets too angry, or feels too out of control.
Still, the novel didn't quite manage to hold my attention in 'I have to finish reading this now'. I think my biggest problem was that both Joss and Dylan fell a little flat - and I didn't quite see them as having to be together. In fact, looking back, not sure I can say I see where there were any sparks. Still, I only spent ninety-nine cents on this book, and I wasn't that interested in the romance - I wanted high-school kids with superhero powers, and I got ones that were smart enough to stay out of NIAC, the government branch that pulls Talents off the streets, and puts them into scary-sounding State Schools.
I wouldn't have paid much more for this book, but so long as further installments are inexpensive, I'll continue to read this series.
